Rome dispatch reports Pope Benedict XV via cable to the Boston Globe urging Americans to persevere for peace. He pledges to do all possible to lessen war horrors, praises American generosity to Belgium, and asks continued aid for war victims as destruction lingers into years of recovery.
Official dispatches report bombardments around Arras and Meuse heights with limited Allied progress near Nieuwpoort and coast toward Ostend. German counterclaims claim occupation of St Georges and continued fighting. East Prussia sees Russian cavalry driven back toward Pillkallen as Austrian front retreats in Galicia.
London reports a special cabinet session to review the American note about delays to U S shipping from British vessel searches. The Foreign Office received the note yesterday and a reply is not expected for days as ministers digest the lengthy document.

Mrs. Harvey, living in Methuen in a one story shack opposite the fire station, faces a $2500 sum if she remains single until 1994 and will receive $50 monthly as a premium against matrimony. The provisions were set by her cousin for a niece and sister in law. She stated she would not marry and recalled her cousin George W. Hale, who died in Chicago last October, whose support aided her living for years.

Governor Walsh appoints Charles R. Gow engineer to the Boston Excise Board succeeding Chairman Fowler. Gow is enrolled Republican and not named chairman. Joseph B. Eastman named to Public Service Commission, secretary of Public Franchise League.
Refugees report Generals Garcia and Valdez of Villa defeated Carranza forces in an all day battle at Ramos Arizpe between Monterey and Saltillo on December 28. Rumor says Saltillo fell. Four wounded trains reached Monterey. Carranza garrisons were moved south to defend frontier towns. Refugees include the widow of Geronimo Trevino.
Dispatches report a bandit attack 30 miles northwest of Vera Cruz yesterday. They stopped a passenger train, shot two Carranza officers and 18 other men, and burned the train.
The Boston Street Car Men's Union will hold a new election Monday January 25. Officers chosen will be installed at the first February meeting of the union.
The union probes at Tremont Temple report widespread misconduct in the December election held in the old Franklin schoolhouse. Candidates allegedly hired voters, funds moved openly, damaging letters were distorted, and some ran hotel headquarters near polling sites dispensing liquor. John Riordan read the findings from the International committee.
A winter romance excites society circles as Miss Phyllis Sears, heir to about 3.5 million dollars, reportedly friends with Wallie Trumbull. Trumbull, Harvard varsity acting captain and senior class marshal, rose from modest means to prominence.
Close friends describe the couple as united by a shared love of athletics. Miss Sears rivals her cousin Sleonora Sears in women’s outdoor sports while Trumbull’s football prowess is widely recognized. A formal announcement is expected.
Samuel Weinstein of Lucerne Street was beaten by three masked men on Woodrow Avenue after 9 PM. They robbed him of his watch and money in a public assault that left him with a broken nose and facial bruises. Passersby aided Weinstein as the trio fled and he reported the incident to police.
