The Finance Commission found Deer Island a reformatory resembling a school for crime. It blamed the Mayor for patronage and drug use among prisoners and officers. The report cites officers seen drunk and morphine use, urging accountability and reform. Continued on Page 13- First Column.
A Christmas tree fire at P. H. Quinn's Dorchester house on Bicknell Street caused $2000 damage after delayed firemen arrived due to broken wires. A maid battled the flames with a broom but was overcome by smoke. neighbor James Cavanaugh carried her to safety and alerted authorities as a still alarm was finally sounded.
Forecast for New England calls for fair conditions with slightly warmer temperatures on Friday and Saturday, light winds shifting to moderate west to south. Public weather bulletin notes improving conditions and rising temperatures across the region.
Policeman Krauss of Station 15 discovered a fire at 138 Main Street Charlestown and forced entry. He carried four children Alice Katie Nellie and James and Mrs Margaret McMahon down smoke filled stairs to safety without pausing to clothe.

The city endured the coldest December 30 in Boston since 1890 with a harsh frost lingering yesterday. Weather forecaster Smith predicted a warmer day today with a Friday warm spell and light westerly winds, promising relief after the cold wave that stretched from Maine to Florida Keys.
