Boston detective J A Meloney, with Sheriff McCoy, captured William W. Craig and Bertie Mears after disguising as a tinker to approach their winter logging camp on Thornton Mountain New Hampshire. They were arrested at a stove repair setup and later pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and arson, with bonds set for grand jury.
New York reports the liner Umbria is safe after being sighted off Fire Island at midnight. Crowds watched from Sandy Hook and Fire Island as tugs patrolled and Captain McKay guided the ship through repairs, declining aid to avoid further danger.
New York dispatch reports Umbria, 750 miles east, with shaft broken and three anchors out. Captain McKay states all aboard well and ready to proceed to New York. gale from north-northwest and drifting noted as Galileo had reported earlier.
In Porter Ohio on December 30 Clark Watkins attacked Peter Watkins after seeing his sister-in-law, Mrs. Peter Watkins, with a man linked to a past scandal. The ensuing church riot left Peter Watkins dead, Harris fatally wounded, James Grover blinded in one eye, Clark Watkins severely beaten, and about six others injured. the church was wrecked.
Major Gillain of the Guards and Krupp agent Eugene Vanderbergen killed in a private garden duel over a woman. After a Wednesday dispute at a beer garden, Gillain and Vanderbergen exchanged shots. Vanderbergen died instantly. The woman involved vanished as authorities weigh blame and possible punishment for Gillain.
New York reports J N Amory bid 1000 for the rapid transit tunnel franchise and claims ownership after the commission signed papers. He states no other bids existed and says the commissioners erred by accepting a smaller bid, planning to fight the sale withdrawal and seek the franchise through court if needed.
The Ohio River is practically closed from Pittsburg to Louisville due to low water levels. An early temperature rise or heavy rain could reopen navigation, but for now the river traffic is halted across the stretch.
Michael H. Keating an insurance agent aged 65 died of paralysis in Belfast Maine today. Hiram E. Pierce a wholesale ice dealer aged 72 also died today in Belfast.

Thomas J. Gaffney a five term House of Correction, one term State Prison inmate, was arrested as one of three men who robbed Linnehan Cambridge paymaster George Whiting on November 8. Burns already jailed. a third suspect at large. Gaffney identified as the hammerer. Gaffney fled to New York then returned to Boston. Gaffney's prior felonies include an 1891 pistol assault and battery and multiple prior terms for larceny and related crimes. He is 26, with a long police record spanning several years in Boston institutions.
