T E Potter and K W Mason of Portsmouth acquire a controlling stake in Chase's pond at Yorkville ten miles away. They plan to bring water to Portsmouth to alleviate dry season shortages. The pond holds 800,000,600 gallons with 150 feet elevation above the city and strong flow. Project deemed feasible and to be carried out soon.
Atchison Kansas December 30 last night a fire destroyed the elegant new home of Charles E Stiles Missouri Pacific railroad agent. Mrs Stiles and their child perished in the flames. Stiles was seriously burned. The cause is believed to be a gasoline engine explosion in the cellar.
Evansville Ind Dee 80 The steamer Carrier struck Little Hurricane Island near Owensboro this morning and sank. One deck hand and two Italian passengers were drowned while the rest of the crew and passengers were rescued and brought to Owensboro. The vessel is a total loss.
London reports the Hamburg American steamer Gellert sighted the White Star steamer Celtic on December 22 in lat 41, lon 64. The Celtic had a broken main shaft but stayed afloat and under sail. Gellert could not tow due to weather but offered to rescue passengers and mails. the offer was declined. The Celtic remained seaworthy with no danger to its crew or passengers.
Worcester Massachusetts December thirtieth 18. The Worcester electric light company completed its organization last evening with a powerful board of directors consisting of leading bankers merchants and manufacturers. The paid in capital is 100000 and incorporation formalities are fulfilled. Corporators include Thomas M. Rogers Loring Coes Theodore C. Bates Hildreth Sprague Pickett Salisbury Liscomb Whiting Denholm Pratt Buffington Winslow and Samuel Winslow. The company will immediately purchase the 200 light Thomson Houston plant and central lighting station and plans to implement the Edison incandescent system for interior lighting. Directors include Rogers Bates Coes Denholm Hildreth Liscomb Whiting Pickett Salsbury and Winslow with Rogers as president and Whit ing as clerk and treasurer. The enterprise begins with a strong business base and bright prospects.
In Middlemiss, LonpDON Ontario on Friday night two robbers entered Grant Silcox’s store and struck him with a weight, crushing his skull. Silcox died from the injury. Police have arrested two suspects named Wrightmian and Graham.
Two masked men halted the Abuene troupe stage near the Colorado river last night and robbed nine passengers of 400 dollars. The mails were not touched.

A housewife heard a man in the stable cry of revenge before the fire and he vanished. A crew’s discovery pointed to Lord, who married a Davis sister who had divorced him years earlier.
Hartford dispatch reports Stewart, a burglar linked to the Wheaton's livery stable safe robbery in Springfield, has been sent to Hartford by requisition. He initially refused to come to Connecticut without papers and gave the alias Starr. authorities say his true name is Stewart and his connection to Philadelphia is noted.

Patrolman Henry L Robinson died at 2 A M Sunday at his home on Freeman Street from injuries suffered Friday night when thrown from his horse at Fields corner Dorchester. He served about nine years on the force with an excellent record. He was first in the eleventh division, then the first division, and later returned to his old division. He was about 37 years old and leaves a wife and one child.
