Mrs Winifred G Wheelock 30 and William Silva 26 both of St Johnsbury Vermont were arrested in Somerville yesterday on a warrant accusing Wheelock of leaving her husband and children December 6 to elope with Silva.
Mrs Wheelock a married mother of six and Silva alias William Purcell eloped from St Johnsbury on Dec 6. Police traced them from Boston to Somerville before officers arrested them at 28 Dana Avenue yesterday noon and arranged their return to St Johnsbury.
Officials from the Department of Justice stated that Attorney General Wickersham neither adopted nor presented to President Taft any view that Congress lacks power to compel witnesses. The denial follows reports claiming congressional investigations, including that into the money trust, were at risk of being thwarted.
The executive board of the State Branch of the American Federation of Labor opposed a legislative caucus for United States Senator. It noted labor records of candidates and declared ex Governor Curtis Guild, now ambassador at St Petersburg, the only one who had been fair to organized labor in their careers.

New Year’s Day may bring strikes as unions threaten action over a revised timetable. The Teamdrivers union of Boston with 25 members and the Plumbers union of 12 demand higher pay, while 3000 New Haven railroad clerks push for $2.25 daily wage. Boston Elevated Employees, 7000 strong, oppose seniority changes favoring loyalists. Union officers plan a formal protest as the schedule takes effect Wednesday.

Miss Sarah McKinnon, 21, a deaf and mute resident of 84 Wal tham street, jumped in front of an Elevated train on Dover street. Motorman Harry Richardson stopped the train, saving her life as the front car barely avoided crushing her.
Railroad clerks of the New Haven system prepare for a possible strike to win a minimum pay of 2.25 dollars per day and equal benefits. They demand Harlem River station workers share the same conditions, including vacation time, and argue the Harlem River privileges should extend to all clerks. Conferences with General Manager Pollack and First Vice President Horn are focused on jurisdiction and pay, with a decision looming.
Six new regular firemen will join the Malden department after citizens approved a referendum granting regular men one day off in five. Commissioner Nutter examined several call men yesterday at the Mountain avenue hose house. The new officers will report for duty likely next Wednesday when the law takes effect.
Miss McKinnon, formerly employed at City Hospital, attempted suicide at the Dover Street Elevated station after a rejected marriage proposal from a Boston man. She leaped into the track pit as a northbound train approached, but a quick brake and reverse halted the car and likely saved her life. She sustained only knee abrasions and remains under observation at the hospital.
Five escaped death when an auto crashed into a lamplighter's wagon near Point of Pines last night injuring three. The car driven by B L Thomas of Boston carried Mr and Mrs Harold Winslow of 16 Joy Street and their guest Miss Marie Marcella Lambert.
Nurses formed a bucket brigade at the White Cross Home for Destitute Mothers and Children on Bowdoin Avenue Dorchester early last evening. They extinguished a blaze on the third floor of the three story building while mothers and infants were evacuated and aided in the effort.
Miss Lambert, initially in danger, regains strength and reverses a plan to return home. She requests transport back to Boston and is accompanied by two ladies and a man to a nearby restaurant where they share a cheerful dinner, reflecting mutual relief and resolve.
A party traveling toward Lynn collided with a lamp lighter’s wagon between Grand View Hotel and Point of Pines. A ladder on the wagon struck Miss Lambert, rendering her unconscious and cut by glass, while Thomas and Winslow were also cut. The wagon wrecked but its driver was uninjured. Miss Lambert was taken home by a passing car to Lynn Hospital.
In Chicago on December 29 a fire destroyed Lorimer Memorial Baptist Church. About 200 children in a Sunday school class escaped through smoke singing Onward, Christian Soldier as organist Mrs. Elmer Anderson and teacher Miss Martha Marquardt led them to safety. The two teachers fled when flames reached the upper area, leaving coats and furs behind. A policeman discovered the blaze during the session and urged the teachers to play to guide the children out. The building was fully in flames by the time all evacuees were outside.
The Rev. George S. Cady blamed bad cooking for many drinkers during his talk on The Young Man's environment at Pilgrim Church Upham's Corner last night. He argued dietary conditions influence moral character and social behavior.
Milford Dec 29 William Frank Draper born Tuesday night to Mr and Mrs Clare Hill Draper. He is eligible to receive $10 000 simply for bearing the name of General William Franklin Draper, whose will provides the legacy to a grandchild with that name. The general has three living sons. Captain Arthur J Draper of Charlotte, N C has a William Franklin Draper child, but the Tuesday infant is the only grandchild to be born since the general's death two years ago.
Albert S. Rand of 78 Winthrop Street Medford reported to Medford police that he was forced at gunpoint by a masked man and robbed of a two dollar bill near the reservoir on Curtis Street at the top of Clarendon Hill West Somerville.
In Aurora Illinois on December 29 a 17 ounce baby girl was born at City Hospital. The infant is described as perfectly formed and strong. Mother Eva Roote is named in the report.
William H Sloan, secretary of the Old Hawes Schoolboys Association for 16 years and recently re elected, died at his Dorchester home 9 Bruce Street aged 72.
Boston forecast calls for rain on Monday and cloudy Tuesday with moderate temperatures and moderate south winds. Washington reports New England expected to see similar conditions with rain on Monday, cloud cover on Tuesday, and mild to moderate winds.
