Chicago December 29 The county grand jury began the eighteenth ward election fraud investigation and summoned A M Day a member of the citizens committee aiding the prosecution. Day refused to testify without assurance his information would not be used to defeat the federal case. He was excused and the matter will be presented to the court tomorrow.

Rail officials oppose lowering freight rates in Springfield meeting

Steamer in Distress Off Fire Island Lighthouse
Late last night a steamship was sighted in distress near the Fire Island lighthouse. She flashed colored lights, blew whistles, and fired a gun at intervals. In the morning the signals continued as two lifesaving stations prepared their gear. Thick fog limits visibility to about 20 feet while a heavy surf rolls in and there is little wind. the vessel may yet pull free.

Ozark County House Burns. Hon. W. Norris Dies
Springfield dispatch reports the home of Hon. W. Norris of Ozark County burned last Friday. Norris re-entered the burning dwelling to save an old family relic but was overcome by smoke and fatally burned in the flames before his wife and children.
