Col Horace G. Kemp a former state senator representative and Cambridge city official was found suffocated by gasoline fumes in the garage behind his home at 1699 Massachusetts Avenue North Cambridge yesterday afternoon. He was a prominent soap manufacturer and militia officer.
He collapsed while working on a car as smoke and gas poured from the exhaust of another vehicle. The body was found leaning over a seat with the engine running at full speed. Authorities believe a fainting spell preceded suffocation from exhaust fumes.
Cable from Governor General Harrison to the War Department says small Filipino groups assembled in Manila Navotas and Laguna de Bay on Christmas Eve and last night. Forty men arrested and one shot. Authorities report the disorders suppressed and leaders sought, the chief believed jailed for homicide.
Margaret Hearn a 55 year old resident of 241 Norwell street Dorchester has been missing since the evening of December 23 after going out to do Christmas shopping Relatives reported her disappearance to police requesting a search saying she left home for only a few minutes and no trace has been found
The Dutch steamer Leersum from Amsterdam and the British steamer Gallier from London struck mines in the North Sea. The Leersum foundered with two crew drowned while the Gallier reached port.
Reports from Harwich say the Christmas Day British raid on Cuxhaven lasted about an hour amid thick air, with no major damage or casualties except the loss of Flight Commander Hewlett and four seaplanes. Seven airmen took part. six returned, Hewlett is feared dead after his machine was found off Helgoland.
French aviators bombed Metz targets and a Lorraine station while German forces recaptured an Alsace position after a French gain. British warships appeared off Flanders as French attacks in Meurissons and the Argonne stalled under German fire. The Czars front return to Poland and major battles in the Carpathians left 10,000 Russians as prisoners and 18 machine guns captured near Tarnow.
A late night blaze at the Cambridge City Almshouse near Arlington Line devastated the building. Inmates, many elderly and disabled, perished or were badly burned as they fled down fire escapes. Names listed include Mrs. Annie Russell Mrs. Mary Dunn and Mrs. Eliza Greenleaf with Theresa Forbes dying and John Ganalls missing.
Theodore N. Vail head of the American Telephone Company proposes gifting his Lyndonville farm to Vermont as a girls school, adding to an existing agricultural school for boys. In Washington, Speaker Champ Clark and Mrs Clark announce their daughter Genevieve's engagement to James M. Thomson, editor of the New Orleans Item, with a spring or early summer wedding planned at the Clark home in Bowling Green, Missouri.
In a Lyndonville letter Mr Vail argues for funds to establish girls schools teaching home life industries and economies. His Speedwell Farm spans hundreds of acres with many buildings and he estimates a state plant would cost 150000. An annual appropriation of 20000 to 30000 would maintain the school.
The French brigantine Amedee was reported in distress in the northwest Atlantic about 500 miles off Cape Race in latitude 45.49 N, longitude 46.41 W. The Maine, bound from Philadelphia to London, stood by as a heavy gale and high seas prevented rescue attempts, awaiting calmer weather before acting. The Haverford wireless noted the Amedee carried wine from St. Malo to St. Pierre and that the Haverford was en route from Liverpool to Philadelphia.
Miss Clark met Mr Thomson in Baltimore during the 1912 Democratic convention where he emerged as a key figure in the fight to nominate the Speaker for the presidency. Since leaving school about two years ago, Miss Clark has led younger officials and congressional society circles.
J. F. Hale, manager of Miller Piano Company in Providence, died from injuries sustained when struck by an automobile earlier today. The incident occurred in the city. Hale succumbed tonight at a local hospital.
Rome reports that none of the powers have protested Italy's occupation of Avlona Albania and many express hope that no complications will force Italy to abandon neutrality.

A deadly fire at a Cambridge four story institution trapped 238 inmates including 148 men and 9 women. Inmates and staff escaped via outside stairs as hoses were used to fight the blaze. Firefighter James Glynn, aged 71, led evacuations and carried two women to safety despite severe burns.
Governor Walsh announced he will not reappoint Medical Examiner George B Magrath despite pressure to name him again. The decision follows a pending Suffolk grand jury probe into Medical Examiner office staff, with a trial not yet held delaying formal public notice.
The appointment of Dr Magrath has been held for almost a year amid a major political battle. District Attorney Pelletier has been a leading figure in the campaign to retain Dr Magrath despite pressure from opponents.
