Hamburg America line steamer Bethania captained by Rusch arrived at Mystic wharf after a rough passage from Hamburg. Departing December 11, a South gale damaged the cabin and galley doors, bent pipes, and loosened a ladder, delaying the ship three days before calmer seas near the Grand Banks.
Lamson & Hubbard hat and fur shop and Bedford Manufacturing store at 39 Kingston Street were badly damaged. Standard Neckwear on the ground floor suffered water damage. Total loss estimated at 10 000 to 12 000 dollars. Five firemen valiantly carried hose up a burning ladder to reach the fire's heart, restraining the blaze.
Lieutenant Carney and five firefighters from Engine 25 and Ladder 17 were on a ladder in front of a burning building when flames blew from the fifth story. Engine 7 redirected water to protect the crew as they held their position during the blaze.
Dorchester Councillor Frederick J. Brand abruptly quit the City Council contest just after filing deadline. Detroit, December 27. Just before a theater curtain rose Frank Worthing, star with Grace George, was struck by a hemorrhage and died within minutes. The tragedy occurred on opening night, ending the performance plans.
The crowded stagehouse saw Mr Worthing collapse and die from a broken pulmonary artery. A Scottish native and 41 years old, he had tubercular illness, debuted in 1885 in London, and rose on the American stage with Daly's 1891 Love on Crutches. He starred in Divorcements with Grace George and appeared in Madame Butterfly and The Climbers.
Mrs. Lillian D. Treen gave a pint of her blood to her husband William H. Treen former Lynn Board of Trade president at Massachusetts General Hospital. He had suffered a week of severe nosebleeds. the transfusion revived him and he is now out of danger. Mrs. Treen stayed at the hospital overnight and returned home briefly before visiting him again.

The Northern Bank of New York with six point nine million in deposits across nine branches was closed by State banking superintendent O H Cheney for the benefit of depositors amid irregular transactions. An asset and liability inventory is in progress and further statements await completion. Cooperation comes from W H Hotchkiss and District Attorney Whitman.
Early today O H Cheney announced taking possession of the Northern Bank of New York at 217 West 125th Street and posted notices on all nine branches. Joseph H Robin, bank director and shareholder, is confined in a private sanatorium for acute paranoia after an alleged suicide attempt, with collateral sought by directors. Readership faced scenes of excitement as depositors and merchants learned of the bank action.
