Mrs Nathan Kellner a refugee at the Chelsea Armory, driven insane by exposure and pain, leaped from her cot and grabbed a hammer to murder her seven children before volunteers and Dr Frank H Chase restrained her. Sedatives restored her to calmness as the children were saved.
Dec 27 Mrs Freder ick A Cook wife of the discredited discoverer of the North Pole is believed to be wandering Europe with his records seeking to locate her husband. The flight of Cook from this country and his alibis, including shaving his mustache and slipping friends, is recounted by Charles Wake who renounces his close ties to Cook.
More than 200 refugees slept in the armory with mattresses and blankets provided by Captain Renfrew. Families shared a dormitory as men, women, and children stayed together, while some preferred to return to damaged homes over accepting charity. Mrs Dora Ganz and six ill children hid in her cobbler shop at 87 Second Street due to flood.
Severe storm kept shoppers away forcing all big downtown stores to continue Christmas markdowns today. John W. Hurley 27 known as Jack Wilson was killed in a Tremont and Albion alley near Dover Street at 7 15 P M last evening. He was lured from a saloon by Bennie Burns, a suspect in the Ponka poag post office robbery. Police search Burns but will not confirm murder charges if arrested.
Hurley and Burns were seen leaving the Dover street saloon together after a New Year greeting. Burns later challenged Hurley outside and a man fired three shots from the alley. Hurley died on the steps. two bullets struck him, one near the nose and another in the chest. Police seek Burns with two witnesses confirming the getaway.
