Fire talisman cloaks shop burns Tremont Street basement

Fire and smoke damaged Chartier's cloak and art shop at 151 Tremont Street. The blaze started in the basement around 9 pm, confined mainly to the basement and first floor. Estimated loss runs toward $35 000 with stock and valuables ruined.

Girl's Peril on Ice Near Mt. Vernon

In New York on December 21 Misa Tisse Downs daughter of Boston Baptist minister Rev W W Downs nearly drowned when ice broke on Halsey's Pond near Mt Vernon. Downs was rescued by Howard N Glover Jr who grasped her and hauled her to shore. Her younger sister Edith and brother Martin also fell in and were rescued while the siblings visited Mt Vernon for the holidays.

Pneumonia Ties Bare Feet To Naval Training Station

An epidemic of pneumonia and typhoid fever breaks out at the Nava Training Station on Coaster Harbor Island near Newport. Twenty cases of pneumonia and several typhoid cases are reported among sailors, blamed on walking barefoot on asphalt between sleeping quarters and toilets at night. The barracks are well heated and ventilated. a board of inquiry is expected.

Somerville Aldermen Postpone Inauguration Arrangements

The Somerville Aldermen delayed much unfinished business to the next city government. City Messenger Mann was authorized to arrange the inauguration ceremonies for the new city government, set for Monday morning January 7, at Anthoine's Academy on our street. The petition of Collins & Ham to resume blasting at their Clarendon Hill quarry was also carried to the next city government. The board will hold its last meeting next Thursday evening.
