Boston Ward Plan Defended Amid Criticism by Mayor

The Beacon Society dinner featured Mayor O'Brien defending the newly signed ward divisions, arguing it is the fairest and most practical plan despite flaws. The piece criticizes opposition, warns against legislative overreach, and defends the city’s autonomy against encroaching meddling by critics and external bodies.

Tariff Puzzle and U S Steel Advantage in Armament

The Washington correspondent says the House ordnance commission will report that U S steel for armor plates and gun manufacture can be produced domestically. American firms may accept 20 percent above Krupp prices, and many would bid, risking price fixing to keep profits. The piece questions protection’s effectiveness, rail quality imports, and whether tariffs truly shield domestic industry while meeting national defense needs.

Gains in totals show robust expansion across regions

With the transactions of that time, we are able to show a gain in the totals of over 44 per cent. New York shows a gain of over 50 per cent, and Boston between 20 and 30 per cent. Almost every section shows more or less gratifying gains. This general distribution of improvement and the steadiness with which improvement is being maintained warrant the hopeful conclusions which we have continued to draw from the figures. Business is in a condition of healthy activity, and it is likely to grow even considerably better before it gets worse.

Parliament Crises Over Ireland Aimed at Parnell

As Parliament nears, Whigs and Tories balk at justice for Ireland. The Times urges ejecting Parnellites from the Commons while Whig leaders deter Gladstone from home rule. Still the English mood favors a local Irish legislature, and further dissolution could boost Parnell’s following. America’s role as Parnell’s support is questioned.
