A large Christmas program fed and entertained 2000 children. Three hundred waiters helped serve meals while a big tree held presents for every youngster. Dinners were delivered in baskets to families able to attend.
Charles H. Cole, former Globe National Bank president, detained in Los Angeles on embezzlement charges, plans to remain while awaiting a Boston complaint and warrant. His attorney says habeas corpus proceedings are likely, with formal action to be decided when the complaint arrives. Cole resides with his wife and son at Van Nuys.
British losses mount as Dutch disaffection grows amid wartime shortages. The seizure of American flour sparks debate over strategic supplies and Allied cooperation.
London December 26 war office releases list of deaths and wounds, noting horse sickness in English and Boer camps in Natal. Four hundred British cavalry horses said to be shot due to glanders, risking longer campaign. Despatches mention Colenso bridge destroyed, Tugela rising, and Dutch disaffection growing in Cape Colony and Natal.
A 4:28 a.m. quake struck Southern California with the San Jacinto region as the epicenter. A selection of valuables including two ladies and gentlemen gold watches a diamond brooch and money were taken. Mr Riley calls it fortunate no one was hurt as the house contains valuable goods and bric a brac.
Four more unidentified bodies are recovered at the Brazwell mine in Brownsville Penn families of the doomed workers receive provisions from Brownsville and Uniontown. A touching tale follows Albert Morse who died minutes after rescue as he watched his father and mule team depart. Officials admit multiple bodies remain inside the mine while Slavonic Society members seek more details.
Chandler Harris, Guatemala coffee planter, hunted for his 9 year old daughter Heloise kidnapped two years ago. Detectives traced them from New York vaudeville circuits to Chicago after a telegraphic request from Harris. They believe the abductor, a former governess, may have fled to San Francisco.
