A Christmas greeting from the Post Santa Claus thanks readers of the Post for funding the annual children's joy across Greater Boston. The holiday effort is nearly complete, with the helpers of the department expressing gratitude for public support.
Through hundreds of trucks and wagons the Post Santa system sends 15000 bundles to many households. Assuming five children per family, about 75000 children are enjoying a Merry Christmas thanks to reader generosity. Continued on Page 9 First Column.

Respondents included the Governor, the Mayor, senior judges, leading merchants, manufacturers, and college presidents, illustrating how memories of Saint Nick endure across public life.

Russian official reports say a German regiment was nearly annihilated on the Bzura right bank while fierce German attacks near Bolimov were repulsed. Additional clashes along the Nida River left Russians with 57 officers and 2000 soldiers captured. Allied actions near Boisselle and Saint Marc Wood are noted with minor gains, while Princess Patricia's regiment sails for front service in London. A German air raid over Dover caused a garden explosion with no damage.
London reports continued fierce combat as Germans and Allies clash in the western theater and in the large Polish battle, with no holiday lull evident. The dispatch notes ongoing operations and the widening scope of the war fronts despite Christmas Eve.
Seventeen firemen barely escaped serious harm when the roof of the Phillips estate at Purchase and Pearl streets collapsed during a three alarm blaze. The four story building lost its third and fourth floors, with estimated damage between eight and fifteen thousand dollars. Many firefighters suffered facial burns and injuries from falling timbers, but most injuries were minor including cuts and bruises. Two firefighters suffered leg injuries but continued to move about.
Patrolman Seavey found a rapidly advancing fire that broke through the roof and fourth floor windows. Multiple alarms followed as flames vaulted across Purchase and Pearl streets threatening nearby chemical and dye works. Fire crews used hydrants water streams and a water tower to confine the blaze to the two upper floors while icy ladders challenged firefighters.
