Sultan Grants Armenian Amnesty and Commutes Death Sentences

Constantinople reports the Sultan grants amnesty to 20 Armenians convicted of government or personal crimes or awaiting trial. Ninety death sentences are commuted to fortress imprisonment, with release possible after three months if good behavior. The move follows pleas from Armenian Patriarch Ormanian and requires the patriarchal mixed council to supervise future conduct.

Miles At Large as Boston Safe Deposit Treasurer

Frank C. Miles, the defaulting treasurer of the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company, remains at large. Police at headquarters admit he may be in the city, though his exact whereabouts are unknown. Rumors of his being taken away by Masonic friends are denied by authorities.

New York honors Pilgrims Day at Waldorf Astoria with five hundred attendees. Mammoth Boston Depot Plans Approved For South Station

Boston officials review revised South Station plans showing a circular corner entrance on Cove and Summer streets, a large two story main building, extensive baggage rooms, restaurant facilities, multiple offices, and a two level train house with 28 tracks designed to move 2000 passengers and 2000 trains every eighteen hours. The Boston Terminal Company seeks a railroad commission hearing before final endorsement.

Board Rejects Miss Hutchins After Stormy Closed Session

The Boston School Board, in a stormy, closed session, conducted six ballots to fill the Bowditch School master vacancy. Mrs. Ames backed Miss Hutchins, arguing she was qualified and supported by parents, but Mr. Schuerch, a man, was chosen on the seventh ballot after doors were closed to the press and public.

Lynchings and fires sweep Mayfield after mob violence

In Paducah Kentucky on December 22, Mayfield riots erupt after Jim Stone’s lynching for assaulting Mrs. Green. A white man Charles Bolin is wounded, a dozen black residents flee, and several dives and a wholesale beer house are burned. Posses pursue suspects as armed townsfolk gather around the court house amid threats of further lynchings.
