The Cunard liner Abyssinia burned at sea after leaving New York on December 13. All 68 passengers and about 80 crew were saved by the German steamer Spree. The ship, valued at $200,000, carried a large cargo including 1223 bales of cotton and 16,000 bushels of wheat, and was bound for Liverpool when fire broke out in the cargo holds.
