Responding to a New York call, Mrs. Seth P. Snow of Newton Centre made a record breaking midnight drive to reach a New York train. Detectives met her at the depot and hurried her to the Hotel Belmont where she gained access to a suite rented with their aid.
Reports from Sydney describe a sudden volcanic blast on Ambrim Island in the New Hebrides group. Craters erupted with lava flows and artillerylike detonations, destroying villages and killing hundreds, while flames rise to a thousand feet and the sea boils under molten debris.
Miss Virginia Vaughn, 21, poet and translator linked with Hawthorne and the Brownings, was struck and killed by a street car on Eighth Avenue in Newfork. She was the daughter of Amos Vaughn, an abolitionist who published anti slavery papers in Cincinnati and Cleveland.
The joint committee on the administrative currency bill agreed to remove the Senate provision creating an insurance fund to guarantee deposits in national banks. A single dispute remained over the composition of the Federal Reserve Board, and the committee also dropped the Senate amendment to allow the new Federal Reserve notes to serve as bank reserves.
East Boston representative Benjamin F. Sullivan died yesterday at City Hospital following an operation performed about a week earlier. He fell ill with an intestinal trouble and had been a gubernatorial candidate defeated by Alexander McGregor. overwork in his campaign was listed as the cause.
Representative Sullivan, born 1875 in East Boston, died at 51 while under arrest in a test case challenging a one cent toll on the East Boston tunnel. A real estate man with partner Frank A. Goodwin, he was allied with Edward J. Mahoney and Lewis R. Sullivan. Survived by wife and four children. The toll issue will appear on the upcoming city election ballot.
President Frank L. Lock of the Boston Young Men's Christian Union and Mrs Lock hosted a formal reception in the union gymnasium yesterday. The event drew several hundred members and their young friends with a musical and literary program.
A seven story annex of a Worcester department store burned, threatening nearby buildings. Loss estimated at 175000 with 105000 attributed to Santa Claus stock and toys. Four hours of fighting left three firefighters injured as flames spread from four top floors before water could reach.
Report reaches Washington that former President Roosevelt and Chilean minister Dr. Marshial Martinez clashed in Santiago de Chile over divergent views on the Monroe Doctrine. The Chilean reportedly dissented from the Roosevelt view that the doctrine remains a vital issue.
English aviator Robert Bertram Slack was killed in an automobile accident between London and St Albans. The death occurred today and his name is well known in aviation circles.

Patrons of grand opera and friends of Miss Geraldine Farrar of Melrose have been unsettled by reports from New York of her serious illness. Two eminent throat specialists attending her sparked rumors she faces a grave ailment possibly affecting her voice.
William E. Walter Boston press agent for concert manager Charles H. Ellis says Miss Farrar has relaxed vocal chords due to a cold contracted in Boston on November 1. He calls the ailment serious and notes she will be continued on Page 2-Sixth Col.
The all rigged ship Avon arrived after a 100 day voyage from River Plate ports, marking the longest trip recorded in months. She was driven 25 miles to sea from off Boston lightship on Thursday and now bears new sails ready to replace the worn ones.
Dr Graustein and his companion were left unconscious for about an hour after a car incident. Police investigated the scene and bystanders assisted until aid arrived.
R Dale Smith a prominent Brockton man died after being pinned beneath his overturned car on Washington street in Stoughton about 1 am. Dr Charles J Graustein his companion was left stunned beside him as they traveled from Boston to Brockton. An hour passed before the physician could assist and determine Smith had died.
A non automobile traveling along a driveway in upper Den Mak leaped a low stone curb and fell to a foot below. Miss Tensile Fitzgerald of Peekskill was killed instantly after her skull was crushed against a rock. Miss Lyman and another passenger escaped with minor injuries. The chauffeur fled unharmed. In Seabright New Jersey an automobile struck a store, burying Mrs Michard of Seabright who died from the wreckage.
