Congress Opposes Shipping Bill and Tariff Discussed

Congressman Candler opposes the shipping bill while Tariff Expert Hi Brown warns the sugar bounty could cost 70 million dollars yearly. Treasury ruling on fish imports pleases General Cogswell, with detailed notes on whom may enter free. Army and Navy Gazette lists officer station, duty changes, retirements, and boards in New York and Fort Keogh.

Sugar tariff expert urges restoring duty on sugar

Henry A. Brown of Massachusetts, in Washington, argues that the sugar tax cut next April will slash revenues by about 70 million dollars annually. He urges Congress to restore three fourths of the old duty and repeal the new bounty, predicting cheaper prices and reciprocal talks with sugar producers as production rises. He says treasury needs will not be met by customs revenues due to tariff reductions and the McKinley bill free list.
