Police say revenge or coercion to reveal wealth location led to the killing of J H Logue a diamond merchant in the McVicker theatre building in central Chicago at noon. Logue aided in sentencing diamond thieves years earlier, suggesting a motive linked to past crimes.
A woman may have aided an assault on Llogue following a torture filled attack in his MecVicker Theatre office. Claude Stratton and three others were arrested. seventeen knife wounds, a gunshot to the shoulder, acid burned mouth, crushed skull, and a near severed thumb indicate a frenzied struggle to force disclosure of a non existent fortune.
Chief Inspector Warren W. Dixon says the Sterling company led among stock sellers in frauds using the mail to promote shares of the Oxford Linen Company of Brookfield Massachusetts. Six men arrested in the city include Frank W. Shumaker and Samuel B. Findlay with bail set at 5000 dollars. three more suspects are to be arrested in Chicago and Brookfield.
Brookfield police say W. A. Winthrop was arrested late tonight in a linen misdeal linked to the Sterling Debenture Company of New York. United States Deputy Marshal Charles A. Bancroft was en route from Boston to arrest two men in the post office department action against the firm.
Representative Benjamin F Sullivan of East Boston was jailed at State Street for refusing to pay the penny tunnel toll, challenging city and state authority. He argued no law requires payment and pledged further resistance if the case goes to court. Miss Adeline Farmer, a drawing teacher at Dorchester High School, raced across the country to reach her fiancé Carrol Barney before he died. The poignant bid highlights devotion as death claimed him en route.
Civil engineer Barney employed by the government at Fort Smith Arkansas, engaged to Miss Farmer. He fell critically ill with fever, sent her racing across the country. A telegram in Chicago said he was alive, but she learned on arrival that he had died three hours earlier. She chose to accompany the body to Boston.
Women of Greater Boston set up 10 stations to sell fresh eggs at 30 cents a dozen and storage eggs at 24 cents. The centers were overwhelmed, with 1500 dozen eggs sold, and dealers predicted storage egg prices would fall further to about 20 cents.
