Ex alderman Arthur J. McQuade was sentenced in New York to seven years in state prison and a $5000 fine for bribery after a lengthy trial. The court noted his public trust was violated and he may owe restitution to the city. The decision followed defense motions for a new trial and venue change.
The Supreme Court granted the motion to advance the Mercantile National Bank of New York case against New York City tax authorities. The case tests whether New York tax laws violate the federal provision that national bank shares be taxed no more than other moneyed capital. Argument is set for the first day after the February recess.
Inspectors Collins and Dugan arrested a well dressed man at the Hotel Brunswick on a charge of beating one or two Boston hotels.
