Amnesty debate in Senate shapes on rebellion and rights
The Senate debated the House Amnesty bill with Republicans voicing support and opposition. Union leaders pressed leniency, while Mr Sumner and Mr Hill urged broader civil rights for freedmen. Amendments sought to limit retroactive effects and extend equal rights in hotels, schools, and transit. The discussion wrapped with a vote planned for tomorrow at 4 o'clock and an executive session requested.
