Dec 19 AP report details a planned attack on Viscount French, lord lieutenant of Ireland, at a narrow road with high walls. One attacker died, a detective near the viceregal car was wounded, and a nearby policeman was shot while patrolling.
Officials at Radcliffe and other colleges refuse to confirm radical activity among students. Assistant District Attorney Daniel J. Gallagher cites new evidence of participation in new thought, red movements, and Bolshevik clubs. He notes many Radcliffe girls attend meetings and are enrolled members. The Radcliffe council may take up the issue at its January meeting.
A child pleads in a Christmas appeal to Santa Claus for a longed for toy. The letter shows sadness on Christmas morning and asks Santa not to forget the family, with a continuation note indicating more text on the next page.
A socialist incumbent, under federal indictment and expelled from the House by the current Congress, wins a special election. He defeats Bodenstab, a fusionist, by a majority of 4806 votes.
A. M. Ogle, head of the National Coal Operators' Association, testified to a Senate committee that the coal plan faced heavy criticism and could lead to union officials being jailed, a disaster feared amid potential consequences.
At a conference in New York City, Dr. Katharine B. Davis proposed that women voters register with exact ages and that the title Junior be applied to women who bear the same name as their mothers. The plan awaits action by the State Legislature and is backed by the Honest Ballot Association.
Victor N. Berger Socialist won re election in Wisconsin fifth district defeating Fusion candidate Henry Bodenstab by 4806 votes 24367 to 19561. About 9000 of 53000 registered voters did not vote and if the House refuses to seat Berger the district remains unrepresented until 1920 Governor Philipp announced.
Miss Eleanor A. Gibson, ill at home at 6 Fairfield street, resisted a masked robber demanding Liberty bonds and diamonds. She cried for help and his threats to shoot were ignored. the intruder fled when her screams drew neighbors. An attempted entry at Captain James M. Clark’s home followed in daylight.
While thawing a gas pipe with an alcohol lamp at 715 Cambridge street Cambridge last night the lamp exploded badly burning Joseph Bradley of 105 Fifth street and injuring John Coyne of 63 Boston avenue Somerville who was assisting him Bradley was taken to Cambridge Hospital while Coyne suffered cuts from flying glass
