Senate Approves tax and postal rate reforms and La Follette plan
The Senate backed a committee amendment repealing the present second class postage zone system and adopting a one cent per pound rate within 150 miles and 1.12 cents beyond, while approving new rates for casualty, fire, marine and other insurance, excluding life. A La Follette substitute proposes sharp increases in war profits and income taxes with adjusted rates and surtaxes, and would retain the corporate tax while easing individual rates. The session also notes war-finance facts and urges continued thrift and sale of war securities as demobilization unfolds.
