A letter reveals tension as Smith disputes offering Hibbard a position. Holden asserts he was only Hibbard’s friend and did not participate in any employment inducement. The back-and-forth centers on what George needs and who offered what.
Charles S. Smith of Old Dominion Copper Co alleges his name was used without permission in a letter by Walter J. Holden to Johnson I. Walker hinting at a business opportunity for Mayor Hibbard if he quits the mayoral race. Smith vows civil action if proven misused. Mayor Hibbard says he has other letters offering inducements to withdraw.
Mr. Smith says he never authorized use of his name in campaign material. He explains Holden contacted him after seeing a letter misrepresenting his stance, and he emphasizes no ties to Mr. Storrow or any attempt to influence the mayoral race. He notes prior neighborhood relations with Storrow and confirms only supportive ties to Storrow's campaign.
Hundreds of letters from thousands of children reach the Post Santa Claus. He seeks many gifts to fulfill their wishes and welcomes reader donations. Boston Opera Company staff, area schools, and local workers join in aiding the effort.
The Post Santa Claus department will be found at the Post building 263 Washington Street this morning at 10 30 and daily this week. Donations of toys candy dolls mittens stockings or money to buy these items for unfortunate children who beg for holiday gifts.
Patrick J Maguire Jr the six year old son of Patrick J Maguire of 80 Wentworth street was fatally struck by an electric car at West and Pleasant streets in Malden around 1 30 pm He was a motorman’s son and recently widowed leaving a daughter after the loss of his wife and four children in the prior 14 months.

A Maguire boy, age unspecified, was fatally struck when he ran in front of an oncoming Edgeworth and Wellington car after a near-miss with another vehicle. Motorman John J. Nolan of Medford was arrested for manslaughter, bail set at 2000, later posted. conductor Henry L. Nelson of Everett assisted.
Five young men were saved from freezing water by human life chains on Butler's pond. In Quincy four girls formed a chain to rescue two skaters who broke through the ice. In Malden three other men were pulled from the water by a second chain of rescuers.
In Quincy on December 19, four unnamed girls formed a life line across thin ice to rescue Charles Pitts and William Morrisey from drowning in Butler's Pond behind the High School on Hancock street. The 18 to 20 foot deep water held about 100 observers as the skaters watched the brave act unfold and the four girls returned home wet and chilled without revealing their names.
Rome reports Cardinal Satolli, after a nephritis relapse, was slightly improved in the morning and received communion in the sick room. By afternoon his condition worsened with delirium and grave fears for his recovery spread as many telegraphic inquiries arrived from America.

Mrs Belmont steps in after lawyers abandon four strikers at the bar. She offers her Madison avenue house as bail security, valued at 400 000 dollars with a possible 100 000 mortgage, to aid the shirtwaist workers and the suffrage movement. Her stance garners sympathy and backing from prominent allies including Mrs M Orm Wilson, Mr and Mrs Samuel Untermeyer, and Rabbi Stephen Wise.
Samuel R. Van Sant announced that the G A R executive committee fixed September 17 to 24 for the next national encampment at Atlantic City New Jersey. The Chicago meeting followed a civil war veterans address urging turnout and support.
Madeline Gray Swift, daughter of Rear Admiral Swift, faces family pressure to resume her engagement to Harry Duer Storer of Atlanta. After an illness forced an indefinite postponement, she is said to prefer marrying an enlisted man over the planned union with Mr. Storer.

Boston & Maine and New Haven boards will meet January 20 to seek wage increases and a 10 hour work day. A referendum carried 7500 members supports equalizing wages and hours with Western roads, plus mileage changes. Proposed: $4.25 daily for passenger conductors, $2.75 for baggagemasters, $2.55 for flagmen and brakemen on 155 miles, overtime at 190 miles per hour, with freight rates applying on through schedules.
