In 1876 Maurizio Bonfanti known as Maurice Mauris arrived in Washington and posed as the Marquis Bandinelli with a forged letter to Italian minister Count Corti. Recognized as a fraud, he fled to New York where he posed as a servant, attempted to steal overcoats, and attacked baron Blanc. He later forged checks to buy jewelry in Newport and New York, and sought a directorship at an Italian publishing house before being dismissed.

One Policeman Murdered by Fellow Officer

Rescue at sea as Salerno saves crew of W. J. Whiting
The British steamer Salerno, 633 tons, Capt. Neill, from Hull, arrived after a 30 day passage in storms. It aided and hauled aboard the crew of the sinking bark W. J. Whiting, Capt. Carter, which had battled gales from Nov 1 to Dec 1, losing two sailors, Jefferson Carter and Robert Carter, and carrying Mrs. Carter and her infant through exposure. The W. J. Whiting was abandoned with seven feet of water. Salvage reports credit the rescue to the Salerno and the British consul handled care for the survivors.

House Cheaply Furnished Arrests in Ninth Station
At about 1 o’clock Monday officers on a search warrant arrested Daniel Mc Carty and his wife Mary of 1040 Harrison avenue on charges of stealing household effects and clothing from Joseph Pratt of 431 Shawmut avenue. About $75 of missing items were found at the McCarty home including bed clothing apparel towels and crockery. Mrs McCarty had served as domestic for six months and was released she had previously been arrested on a separate charge of stealing $30 from Katy McDonald and posted bail.
