Painting tied to Bayes questioned as wall covering tale emerges
The Bayes painting, once hung in London about 30 years ago, is argued by Robert Sayles to be a wall covering used in his family dining room for 15 years. He says the piece is painted on wall cloth, not canvas, and doubts it is the original. Elston, who dismantled the Sayles home, has kept the artwork since. The 7 foot 8 inch by 18 foot piece was bought circa 1897, with no prior owner recalled, and valued little by the family.
