Washington December 17 Secretary Cortelyou issues a signed statement denying rumors of undue political activity by his friends in the forwarding movement and any candidacy by him. He says neither he nor his friends have supported any presidential candidate and that if he ever seeks office he will announce it openly.
A Boston woman, Mrs Russell Story, stranded in Joliet after four days of starvation while seeking work to support her five weeks old baby. She says her prominent Boston family background and husband abandoned her in Denver California shortly after their infant's birth. She sought aid from supervisor John R Herath as a last resort before becoming town dependent.
Goldfield Nevada reports power cut at 5 pm as Nevada California Power Company lines go down. Rumors say a cut wire near Palmetto two miles away. residents fear outages and some urge General Funston to deploy troops to patrol the camp.

Reserve Officer Frazer with Officers Burke and Driscoll and four citizens saved seven people from smoke at 13 Porter Street East Boston. The three story wooden tenement housed the Segal and Neddle families. Firefighters broke the front door, freeing sleeping residents on the second floor and reviving all seven after brief collapses.
Reserve Officer Joseph J. Burns was commended by Mayor Grimmons for bravery shown at a dawn fire at 102 Vernon Street Somerville last Friday. Chief Parkhurst granted Burns authority to take two days off with pay when service permits.

District Attorney John B. Moran conferred with Attorney Michael J. Sughrue of the Finance Commission about land deals the commission has been probing. They also discussed Mayor Switzgeralds bridge department salary increase and the commissions demand that the order be rescinded.
Inspector B. McCausland 55 of the Bank Squad in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation died last night at 587 Columbia Road after 32 years in service. He helped clear the South End of notorious gangs and served at Station 4 before his promotion. Born January 1, 1852, he began as a police officer in 1875 and became an inspector in 1893. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Joseph Schwab of Pittsburg and New York, brother of Charles M. Schwab, plans to marry actress Paula Edwardes after his divorce from Esther Mullhall. Edwardes, a Broadway musical star educated in Philadelphia, appeared in Tabasco, A Black Sheep, La Falote, and The Whirl of the Town.
In Malden on December 17, Miss Maud B. Sargent wed Dr. Frank Dorsey of Cleveland after meeting him during her nursing training at St. Agnes Hospital Baltimore. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. John R. Shannon at the Centre Methodist Church. The match surprised many friends.

William Thompson known as Lord Kelvin, famed as one of the greatest scientists, was born in Ireland on June 25, 1824. He studied at Cambridge and Glasgow, became professor of natural philosophy at 22, and held that chair for 53 years until 1899. He married Margaret Crum in 1852, who died in 1870, then married Frances Anna Blandy in 1874. The era saw early telegraph use and the first short submarine cable in Portsmouth Harbor.

The Navy Department requests the Post to announce that all mail for sailors on the battleship fleet may be sent at domestic postage rates. Address mail care of postmaster New York. First point of receipt is Rio de Janeiro on January 4. after that no mail will be delivered until Callao on February 18.
Norfolk wireless station reports contact with the battleship Georgia at sea 110 miles south of Beaufort North Carolina. The message indicates speed and squadron formation unchanged and all well despite choppy seas. This marks the first communication since 1 a.m. due to bad weather.

Great Barrington reports Martin Dooley aged 18 rescuing his brother John 20 from a Lake Erie hole near Stockbridge. Martin broke the ice to reach shore after both fell in and then exhaustedly reached safety. They were taken home afterward.
Frederick I. Sargent 37 vice president cashier and manager of Jewellers National Bank of North Attleboro was found dead in his bath tub with the valve closed. Medical examiner cites drowning. DA may order autopsy. Directors say bank funds intact while Sargent had been overworked and ill, recently married Marion Morgan of Auburndale survives him. He previously worked at State Street Trust and Commonwealth Trust in Boston.
William Hichler a retired merchant of McKeesport Pennsylvania dies in a Pittsburgh hospital after attempting to remove his own appendix. He planned the surgery two weeks earlier and prepared a knife ligatures and a makeshift setup. He stretched on his bed cut into his abdomen hoping to perform the procedure himself.
In Worcester on December 17 Judge Field fined Mrs. John Wilksie of Athol $15 and ordered $100 bonds for three months to keep the peace. She could not post the bonds and was jailed in Fitchburg after his complaint. He weighs 105 pounds to her 205 and says he is in mortal fear of her. He alleges she tied him to a doorpost and chased him with a hot poker.
