William Reed, former treasurer of the South Boston railroad, was sentenced to seven years in state prison for defalcation. An expert accountant's report on Reed's misdeeds was presented. New York dec 17 Jacob Rosenberg juror in the McQuade trial sues James R Vickerman and Thomas J Nesbitt for slander asserting $25 000 damages each and seeks to recover amid perjury accusations. Vickerman and Nesbitt arrested for slander. McQuade sentence postponed until Monday as juror conduct questions loom.
William Gibbon Charlies Rowlan and John Sullivan were arrested at Ford's Hotel by Sergeant Wyman and Officers Fernald and Pedergast for breaking into Benjamin Noyes jewelry store at 356 Washington Street and stealing watches chains bracelets and other items. A secrf pin and a gold ring were found among the suspects belongings and tags bearing H P were linked to Horace Partridge shipments. Most stolen property was not recovered.
William Reed was sentenced by Judge Pitman in the Superior Criminal Court to seven years in the State prison with one day solitary confinement after pleading guilty to counts involving embezzlement of about $100,000 and overissue of stock. Attorney Paul West sought mitigation citing Reed’s work for the South Boston Horse Railroad and personal character. Witnesses and defense efforts were discussed but the judge adjourned to Monday for further hearing before final sentence.

London December 17 Mr Finlay defence counsel kept up closing arguments in the Campbell divorce case arguing Lady Colin Campbell Duke of Marlborough and Chiefshaw refused to produce letters. He attacked Dr Hicks as partisan and challenged the alibi for Sunday August 18 1853. He asserted O Neil’s keyhole sighting was unproven and noted General Butler would have denied the charge if innocent. The case adjourned.
