An explosion likely from gasoline leakage caused panic among maids as fire from the garage spread into the house through basement windows. Firefighters quickly controlled both blazes. Osborne and another car suffered heavy damage. Osborne was hospitalized. Mrs. Fearing kept calm and questioned the extent of injuries. Mr. Fearing was unaware until the near end.
John Burns of Chelsea and a man identified only as Boston Slim died from exposure while crossing the Vermont New York border. Burns with Patrick Noonan started yesterday for Woodstock and was found frozen beside a roadside today. A second victim, an umbrella mander, was found dead at Reedsville New York across the state line.
After four days of heavy seas and head winds the Mauretania docked at dawn completing the first leg of what may be a record round trip to Liverpool. Teutonic, though faster from port, was passed as the Cunard liner entered the river from Quarantine. Both ships carried record Christmas mail and coaling for the return leg began before daylight.
Reporters and photographers scoured eastern Massachusetts for Hattie Le Blanc as she spent a third day of liberty in almost absolute rest. She stays with friends of her counsel Attorney Melvin M Johnson near the city center to avoid disturbance while she recovers from the trial excitement and fatigue.
Mr. Johnson said Hattie did nothing all day and rested with friends. Dispatches had Hattie in St John Nova Scotia with her father and sisters en route to West Arichat, which he called rot. Relatives received letters offering money and help, bringing total contributions to two hundred dollars by last night.
W. R. Holt of a London paper arrived in Washington for a whirlwind 38 hours of sightseeing. He met President Taft, visited the Treasury, Post Office, Commerce and Labor, and the Capitol. He described public men as ripping and planned a Mauretania departure for London tomorrow evening.
A cab with one passenger was struck by an electric trolley car on Milk Street near General just before midnight. The cab overturned and hurled the driver J. H. Fagin and passenger Martin J. Yonner into the street. both escaped serious injury. Yonner, from 32 Jefferson Street, Lynn, was buried under debris briefly.
A blaze at the Bay State Belting Company near Witch Hill in Salem caused about 75000 in damage to the plant and stock. Firemen battled the flames amid wind driven sparks while aid came from Peabody Beverly and Marblehead. Neighbors aided, including Nellie O Hara and her recovering mother providing comfort to workers.
A boiler room fire at a betting concern in Carletonville roared through six adjoining structures on Mason and Grove Streets near the Peabody line. Engineer William Tobin and assistant John Potter escaped in their overalls as flames spread, aided by out of town engines and rapid responses from Salem and Peabody firefighters. The blaze interrupted railroad traffic for hours and endangered nearby factories, including Bay State Belting, Cass & Daley, and Hall Leather, with roofs repeatedly catching fire before extinguishment.

Judge Putnam of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that ordinary affection for a fiancée constituted legal negligence making him oblivious to other duties. He also expressed pity for men unable to feel such love.
Miss Alice B. Minard of Pougheepsie New York and her fiancé Phillips Payne Partridge of Pittsburgh were driving to Old Orchard Beach when a Portland train struck their carriage near Wormwood's Crossing. Partridge died and Minard was injured. verdicts awarded Minard six thousand dollars, his father denied damages. Judge Putnam denied the father a new trial but granted Minard a new trial, ruling the couple's affection caused no negligence and the driver bore sole responsibility.
