Schwab Confronts Carnegie Tariff Views Before Ways and Means
Charles M. Schwab testified before the Ways and Means Committee, disputing Andrew Carnegie on tariffs and arguing steel rail costs justify a tariff reduction. He said U S Steel’s output accounts for 40 to 45 percent of domestic steel, denied ties to German or European syndicates, noted English labor woes, and claimed a 15 to 20 percent profit norm with top makers at 25 percent. Professor Taussig questioned tariff benefits and warned Schwab’s bias could color his testimony.
