Surrender of Mazatlan and Blockade Reported

Mazatlan fell to French forces after a Nov 12 arrival of three French ships and a flag of truce. Governor Rosales was informed of a blockade starting Nov 13 and hostilities to begin the same day. The city surrendered the next day as decrees to preserve order and regulate press and mails were issued. Stevens arrived with nearly $100,000 in specie and silver ore details. The America and Brother Jonathan carried large gold consignments and passengers.

Union forces break Hood’s army at Nashville in heavy engagement

General Thomas’s deployed forces attacked Hood’s army in front of Nashville at nine this morning. The action is described as apparently successful with five miles gained on the right. Hood’s line collapsed after losing 17 guns and about 1500 prisoners, while earthworks and most positions were taken. Casualties reported light.
