In Salem a court hears startling charges in the divorce action of Edwin A. Gerould and Marjorie Gerould. Attorney Henry F. Hurlburt argues for the platonic husband brother as the case moves toward a court decision tomorrow morning.
Sixteen seamen from the destroyer Billingsley were rescued after drifting in Penobscot Bay in small boats for hours in a fierce winter gale. Frostbitten, they were hauled aboard the Billingsley as the storm prevented shore landings. Both destroyers Billingsley and Putnam reached Rockland and docked there with eight rescuers and eight rescued aboard.
Judge Charles F. Jenney of the Massachusetts supreme court, ill at his Hyde Park home for days, was admitted to Peter Brigham Hospital possibly for gall bladder surgery. He has served on the bench nearly 15 years.
Twenty one hundred appeals for toys clothing and games were received yesterday by Post Santa Claus. Four children from Greater New England sent scribbled pleas asking not to have empty stockings on Christmas. In Worcester in December 1944 thieves stole three overcoats from Mechanics and Washburn Halls during a police ball. Police and detectives crowded the event, with fewer coats taken than at a prior firemen’s ball when six or seven coats vanished.
A bootlegging dispute spanning from the North Atlantic coast to Chicago ended with the shooting death of a man believed to be Annibale Stilo of Boston and Brooklyn. Albert Bruno admitted to shooting Stilo in broad daylight at Hanover and Union streets while visiting in Randolph.
