Radical city reforms urged by Somerville finance committee
The Somerville Board of Aldermen heard a six month finance inquiry urging a fulltime mayor, permanent city auditor, charter revision, and pensioning of older police as part of drastic changes. It finds the city cannot meet bills under the $12 tax limit and calls for lower bid procurement and abolishing the committee clerk position. It also suggests raising the mayoral salary to allow full-time service and trimming fire department officer levels, arguing lieutenant rank for acting captains is unnecessary.
