About 12,000 worshippers joined in the closing of a two day conference at Mechanics Hall led by Dr. J. Wilbur Chapman and Charles M. Alexander as they sang All Hail the Power of Jesus Name and lifted their right hands in praise.
Cards circulated as about 2000 attendees pledged $6000 for 1911 or 1912 if the evangelists return to Boston. Dr Chapman and Mr Alexander stood on a table weeping as they heard the promise, while the ailing preacher delivered a stirring plea for life and faith.
Readers flood the Post Santa Claus department with requests for gifts for many children and even whole families. Letters from Boston families ask for a visit and presents for one to fourteen children as the annual charity drive draws record support.
Letters and small cash gifts sent to the Boston Post Santa Claus editors. Donors include James J. Phelan E L Granger William J Dooley and others urging that funds aid poor children and spread Christmas cheer. The note mentions a five and a ten dollar contribution and a request to divide funds for broader assistance.
In Shelton Connecticut on December 14 Michael Ernesto 45 killed Bertha Milillo with a throat cut then took his own life in the home over his failure to raise $50 for an eye operation. Both were described as 45 years old.
Mrs. Julia Ward Howe, 91, and Mrs. Philip Snowden spoke to a large Tremont Temple audience on women’s suffrage. Snowden noted English women can hold local offices but cannot vote for Parliament and urged that parliamentary franchise be granted as equal to men, framing the right as a citizen function, not a gift.
Mrs Snowden denounces English author Mrs Humphry Ward as a specimen of arrested development and claims suffragists should thank her for being enrolled among anti suffragists.
In Washington on December 14 Uncle Joe Cannon and Irish MP T P OConnor met after adjournment. They discussed House of Commons procedures for about fifteen minutes. OConnor later fled to the Speaker's room pursued by reporters and some Congressmen, predicting an English Liberal victory and home rule for Ireland.
A rumor claims Hattie LeBlanc will plead guilty to the shooting that killed Clarence F. Glover at the East Cambridge courthouse. District Attorney Higgins dismissed the suggestion of a negotiated plea and said the case would be prosecuted only on solid evidence.
W G Spiller American proprietor of the Astor House and alleged owner of the Cuban steamer Oteri was expelled from Panama territory by decree of President Obalila. He was placed aboard the Royal Mail steamer Magdelena bound for Jamaica and New York. The Oteri had carried canal employees to Brazil amid accusations he enticed workers to quit canal jobs for South American employment.
Central American diplomatic circles interpret Mexico's gunboat Guerrero heading to Corinto as offering asylum for President Zelaya on abdication. Diplomats note the Guerrero can dock at Corinto while U S warships Yorktown and Vicksburg cannot due to draft limits.
Worcester moves toward licensing by March 20 as cities like Lowell Malden and Fall River report gains in licensing efforts. Officer Brown defeats in Lowell while Howard faces shortages of money friends and food at times noted in the report.
In a wave of temperance results Worcester shifts to license by 3720 after two years as a dry center. Salem returns to no license by 118 and installs Arthur P. Howard as mayor. Somerville women gain seats on the school committee, while Lowell’s George H. Brown loses to John F. Meehan by 498 votes. Malden elects George H. Fall after six campaigns. Melrose remains no-license amid denial of pony licenses. Newton sees suffrage activity. Newburyport barely stays no-license by 10 votes. Overall, 29 cities show 12 467 license majority vs 8935 no-license last year.
Labor leaders from the United States and Canada end a two day conference in Pittsburgh with a formal pledge to battle United States Steel Corporation over its open shop policy. Samuel Gompers presided as AFL president and the decree was added to the federation’s records.
A resolution detailing labor complaints over low wages long hours and oppressive conditions is forwarded to President Taft and Congress. It notes the Steel Corporation’s power and wealth and claims its workers’ rights are being eroded, with copies sent to state governors where the company operates. The document includes a call to action and references continuation on Page 4.
Arthur P. Howard, who arrived in Salem a year ago with no money and served time for alleged criminal libel, defeated four opponents including incumbent mayor John F. Hurley to win the mayoralty from his Salem Dispatch cell.
Howard, absent due to his father's death in New York, wins the mayoral race with 1841 votes, defeating McSweeney 1561 and Hurley 1511. No license returns 8733 against 3215. Goodhue and Pollock receive 1482 and 822. Good Government Association reelects four aldermen.
A rabid white bulldog attacked seven people in the city’s lower section tonight before a policeman shot and killed the animal. Local health officials were to assess bite wounds and risks.
No balloting for National league presidency. Ward said to be sure of four votes, Heydler three, while St. Louis has not yet signified any choice. Ned Hanlon mentioned as a compromise candidate. American league directors hold brief session and bury signal tipping scandal, Deshler drawn with Bronson at Armory A. A. Garcelon says Canadian rugby will not displace American game.

Fall renew his perpetual candidacy with a six year run heading to victory.
Weather outlook for Boston and vicinity shows partly cloudy skies, slightly colder air, and fresh westerly winds midweek. New England forecasts mark modest snow in the north and moderate west winds from Wednesday into Thursday with fair conditions toward the Grand Banks for steamers bound to Europe.
