New York reports Ives defeated Slosson in a 21 inning billiards match scoring 600 to 478. Ives opened cautiously using nursing tactics and earned the first cheer at hundred shots, with a dramatic finish as he extended to 600 points. Slosson showed flashes of skill with 132 point in the eighteenth and 113 in the nineteenth innings.
The Superior Criminal Court opens the trial of Patrolmen Lowery and Innis for the assault on veteran John Hickman and his 8 year old daughter Mary. Jury selected. case set before Judge Sherman with instructions not to discuss or visit the scene. The officers had been reassigned to Station 2 sparking citizen protest. The attack occurred at a Pepperell place tenement sink where tenant Dennis Cronin sparked the confrontation.
The two officers Lowery and Innis beat an elderly man and struck his daughter during a dispute. They were sentenced to four months in the house of correction but resumed duty two hours later after bonds were posted. The episode sparked a mass meeting and local commission actions later described as local history.
The Rev. Walter A. Dunnett will hold his closing meeting at Faneuil Hall today at noon addressing young men. There will be no meeting Saturday and all will unite at Bromfield Street Church.
Mayor-Elect Matthews departed for Maine with Governor Russell and senior officers at 7 PM last night. They will stay in Hartland at the Modern Club and will not return to Boston before Monday. Matthews left notes about relief committee duties and urged immediate vaccination stations citywide.
A Lynn Saugus annexation appears likely with a joint Lynn-Saugus committee negotiating concessions. Saugus seeks better lighting, streets, police service with nine officers, plus a board of health and city physician, governing council structure, and no liquor licenses. The two committees will report back to their governments.
In Brockton a heated committee of the whole discussed the memorial rotunda for the new city hall. A papier mache arch decorative bid stood at 8244 while ten war paintings could be done by Richard Holland for 5500. The body moved to table and approved a 5000 employment work order. it also proposed combining the tax collector and city treasurer offices.
J. J. Van Alen arrived in Liverpool aboard the Majestic and was questioned about his decline of the United States ambassadorship to Italy. He cited letters from Cleveland and the State Department and noted no indication of Cleveland’s replacement plans.
Champion James J. Corbett reached Jacksonville amid a huge crowd at the depot. No arrest was attempted as his party was escorted to a hotel. He spoke about Mitchell and the upcoming bout, saying he would endure six months in jail to train on bread and water. The group then headed to Mayport to inspect training quarters.
George Lasher of the Boston and Albany was standing atop a moving freight train at 12 30 yesterday when he failed to see the West Chester park bridge and was thrown to the ground. He was taken to Emergency Hospital where doctors reported a fractured skull.
Mary Gaffney of 113 Beach Street was knocked down by a team driving past the Beach and Lincoln corner yesterday afternoon. One hip was broken and she was carried to City Hospital for treatment.
In Pittsburg Angelo Zappe was hanged at 10 55 this morning for the murder of Frank Helm stetter. In Smith Port Ralph Crossmire was hanged this morning for the murder of his mother Mrs Lucetta Crossmire about a year prior.
Boston reports its twenty first smallpox case as Christine Morrison of 71 Brookline Street and a one month old Reagan from 3 West First Street, South Boston, push the outbreak. Dr. McCollum orders Morrison to the pest house while the infant is moved to hospital. The Morrison family at 98 Westminster Street faces multiple afflictions with one death. Officials urge vaccination and quarantine measures as the city mobilizes a response with hospital staff and fumigation efforts.
The corn festival opened at Cadet armory in Salem to promote adopting corn as the national flower. The exhibit included United States classified corn and Minnesota corn from Chicago. Events list Salem day, Boston day with a Boston excursion, Essex county day with Gloucester and Amesbury trips, national day with an address expected from Secretary Morton, and woman's day featuring prominent patrons from across the country.
Governor elect Greenhalge was honored at a reception by the Woman's Alliance and Ladies Sewing Circle of the Frat Unitarian Church in Lowell. About 250 people attended the supper at six with thanks expressed and a social hour to follow.
Miss Edith Pauline Nevens daughter of Frank H. Nevens of Malden married Charles Walter Chase a Lynn business man at her Summer Street home. Rev W F Seault of the Universalist Church officiated. Bridesmaid was Miss Hattie Chase. A reception followed and the couple will tour before settling at 61 Alice Lynn.
