Fire destroys Plympton street block and adjoining properties

Last night a blaze on Plympton street swept a four story brick block at 75 to 81 and nearby wooden structures. The fire began from an upstairs workshop, spread rapidly, and required a second alarm. Occupants included carpenters, furniturers, stairbuilders, and pianoforte makers. Losses across the row and adjacent buildings are estimated in the thousands, with partial insurance coverage for several tenants.

Wagner Lohengrin in Boston Impresses with New Opera

A Boston audience heard Wagner's Lohengrin, praised for its bold musical drama and unprecedented use of recitative and orchestral color. Performers Miller Albani, Cary, Carpi, Del Puente and Muzio received strong praise for conveying the ambitious score, while notes on its length and demand contrasted with the enduring appeal of traditional operas like Sonnambula and Norma.
