Oil and Cotton Markets Show Mixed Yet Steady Trends

Rigid market snapshots show oil fields near Boyd and Armstrong yielding eight barrels per hour and rising to 160 barrels per hour, while Pittsboro crude remains weak. Cotton futures close steady to weak with 205,000 bales traded. Upland prices hover around 10 to 11 cents, London and Manchester reports note feeble demand and steady prices amid a cautious trade climate.

New York Stock Market Opens With Firm Tone

Money in good supply at 1 percent on call and prime mercantile paper 419 6 for silver 107. Foreign exchange firm at 4s1 45% for long and at 485 48544 for short sight. Governments steady. State bonds quiet. Railways irregular. At the open the market was firm with prices up 4% to 5%. Delaware and Hudson broke to 82% before midday. Lackawanna rose from 1014 to 103 amid firmer tone, then faced higher supply and slower lending.

Heavy wheat shipments strain Duluth elevator capacity

A St Paul report notes Manitoba, Duluth and Northern Pacific wheat shipments have been heavy for weeks. Elevators at Duluth with about 6 million bushels capacity are nearing full, forcing temporary storage plans. Remaining space ~1.25 million bushels. ~700,000 more bushels needed. Manitoba and Duluth carloads and road shipments are listed, with Manitoba ordering no more wheat to Duluth.

Suit Against the New Haven and Hartford Rail Directors

In Hartford Conn on December 12 Henry L Goodwin of East Hartford sued the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad directors to seek accountability for stock purchases in the New Haven and Northampton line. Defendants moved for non suit citing no September appearance. Judge reserved ruling. Also notes a Baltimore and Ohio quarrel settled and a Wabash quarterly report showing receipts of 7 052 million and disbursements of 7 138 million for three months ending November 30.

Cattlemen Leader Urges Policy At St Louis Convention

Brisbin, vice president and chairman of the national executive committee of cattle men, explains the aims of the St Louis convention. He says free ranges are no longer practical and a majority of U S cattle men favor private grass lands, a Texas cattle trail and an animal industry bill. He notes one sixth of west of the Missouri river cattle are English owned or controlled, feeding on American lands and driving Americans from the business. The letter appeals to the public and Congress to shield American growers from foreign capital and to favor cheap beef for home use.

Motion for receiver in San Pedro and Canon del Agua case

In Hartford on December 12 Judge Beardsley heard a stockholders lawsuit from Jeremiah M. Watson of Boston seeking a temporary restraining order and the appointment of a receiver for the San Pedro and Canon del Agua Mining Company. A hearing was scheduled for Friday next week.

Cigar Makers Face Strike Over Wage Cut in Philadelphia

About 100 workers employed by J Portuondo have decided to strike over a $2 per 1000 cigars wage reduction after consulting with the Cigar Makers International union. The action will take effect tonight as workers walk out en masse.
