The American Federation of Labor officers pledge full accounting of funds at the January 8 1912 Executive Council meeting in Washington DC. Gompers Morrison Short Spencer and others sign the statement confirming they will publish details of money received and paid.
Labor unions question a $190,000 fund raised to defend the McNamaras in Los Angeles dynamiting trials. About $75,000 allegedly reached Darrow and assistants. the remainder awaits accounting. Gompers and AFL officers promise an audit at the January labor convention.
McNamara brothers arrive at San Quentin. James B. McNamara is condemned to life for murder after confessing his role in the Los Angeles Times bombing. John J. McNamara, secretary of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers, receives a 15 year sentence for dynamiting the building.
In Briceville Tennessee the Cross Mountain coal mine explosion left about 100 men missing and feared dead as families gather at the mine mouth. Eight bodies were recovered by nightfall, with seven identified including Lee Pelston Eugene Ault Taylor Ault Roland Early W A Farmer Herman Sharp and James Foust. An 18 year old Alonzo Wood was not positively identified.
After more than 36 hours of relentless labor the surviving miners near Briceville push toward the main entry head nearly three miles in. They plan to light cross entries tomorrow to reach the mass cast by the blast while black damp halts progress briefly and the workers face dangerous gases. Thousands of curiosity seekers gather at the mine entrance as crews persevere amid peril.
Frank W. Sandford, convicted leader of the Holy Ghost and Us Society, remained aboard his yacht offshore as a 600 strong group in Shiloh, Maine, spent the day in prayer for his deliverance. Leaders held a secret session in the temple office while residents prayed continuously.
The Cunard steamship Laconia, built for the Liverpool to Boston run, will sail from Liverpool March 12 arriving Boston March 20 and depart six days later. She replaces Ivernia and mirrors Franconia, with anti rolling tanks and 18 200 tons gross tonnage. Captain W D Irvine may command the vessel.
Five separate fires started in baby carriages under tenement stairways in Harlem. The blazes were likely the work of a single incendiary who moved quickly between sites. Firefighters kept damage minimal and a citywide alert issued for the fire bug.
Fred Clark Newhall 48 a former Lynn shoe maker and active in Saugus politics and social life died suddenly at his Lexington home of acute Brights disease. He founded the Nanapashemet Club of Saugus and was a Mason. He leaves a wife and one son.
In New York a grave in Potter's Field will not be Pryce Lewis's final resting place. Friends arranged for a private burial after the Union spy leaped to death last week from the Pulitzer Building. W A Barnes said a Waterbury cousin aimed to take Lewis to visit a long lost brother, Matthew Lewis, believed dead.
The Rev Joseph H Twichell pastor of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church Hartford for 46 years resigns effective July 1912. A close friend of Samuel Clemens he served as chaplain of the Seventy first New York during the Civil War and is 73 citing age for stepping down.
Leaders of the faithful discuss finances and Lawyer H. E. Coolidge announces Sandford will be defended on insanity grounds. The Shiloh colony relies on Sandford’s magnetic authority to recruit, fund, and control members, with property valued near half a million dollars and farms across the region.
