Executive salary debate and proposed cuts in 1873
The minority report led by Kas son of Iowa and Jewett of Ohio argues the Executive share of salary increases fuels public discontent. They propose trimming incidental Executive allowances while preserving essential needs. Across 1873 74, Executive costs exceed 127 000 including a 50 000 salary and 77 000 in additional appropriations. The piece questions President Grant's perceived lavish pay and urges retrenchment in Executive funding, noting Cabinet costs and lobbying claims. The Senate is urged to reject Williams's renomination.

Monumental canal tunnel plan spurs public protest
A Senate bill proposes extending the James River and Kanawha Canal to the Ohio River via a seven and four fifth mile tunnel through the Alleghany Mountains. The design would be enormous with 75 feet width and 50 feet height, allowing 280 ton vessels, costing an estimated 50 million for the tunnel and far more for the line. Critics call the project a dangerous and inflated government imposition and urge public protest.
