New York Merchants Protest Freight Rate Bias Toward Boston

In New York on December 8, merchants voiced alarm over freight-rate discrimination by trunk lines favoring Boston Philadelphia and Baltimore over New York. A committee detailed price advantages for Boston soda ash and lower freight costs to the West, blaming a New York road for much of the bias. Resolutions protested the railroad combination and sought relief, with officials promising consideration and possible adjustment. A notable meeting of Chamber of Commerce members and sugar trades discussed coordinated action.
