President Taft's first annual message was delivered to the Senate and House. Reading lasted about ninety minutes with no visible enthusiasm. Republicans found it conservative and aligned with campaign pledges. Democrats praised economizing but deplored the suggestion that the Monroe Doctrine is obsolete.

In Hamburg on December 7 a gas explosion at the Kleine’s Grasbrook site in the Elbe front left twenty seven workers dead and about forty seriously injured. Two gas tanks were torn apart and flames obscured the sky for several minutes.
Harvard and Yale began revising football rules after a three hour Cambridge conference. Yale president and Walter Camp met Harvard officials to discuss reforms. The action aims to reduce danger and influence the mid winter rules committee meeting in New York.

John F. Fitzgerald and Matthew Cummings met for the first time during the present mayoralty campaign at a Robert Emmet Branch meeting in Arcanum Hall Jamaica Plain. Cummings, national president of the AOH, stopped his talk to shake Fitzgerald's hand before resuming. Fitzgerald’s only visit that evening was this meeting despite two dances planned at Howe Hall and Orienta Hall.
James J. Storrow led a whirlwind South Boston visit last night starting a game, meeting eight clubs, and receiving a cordial greeting at the Madison Social Club and St Augustine Lyceum. He was accompanied by John F. Burke and was warmly introduced to members including Bart Oaks and Michael Concannon as he toured Emerson street and Broadway.
In Waltham on December 7 the case of Hattie LeBlanc on the alleged murder of Clarence L. Glover looms large with private detectives preparing for a potential surprise in Juvenile Court. Mrs. Glover, widow of the slain man, is summoned to testify if examination is not waived. Assistant District Attorney Weir will represent the government. Witness Frank Marchetti reports seeing a man and a woman near the laundry direction the night of the shooting, detailing observations from his Crescent street boarding house.
After eight hours of deliberation the jury returned a sealed verdict at 9 15 p m following supper at the Revere House. Judge Harris will disclose the verdict at court this morning. District Attorney Pelletier noted that a long session suggested a disagreement while a quick decision could imply acquittals for all defendants.

John O Gara of Winthrop was beaten and robbed of 12 dollars by three foot pads at the Bread and Milk streets corner at 1 this morning. Two thieves escaped while a man named John M Cline was captured by an officer who responded to O Gara's cries.
Massachusetts cities Fall River New Bedford Marlboro and Gloucester moved back to license yesterday while Haverhill voted against license. Overall 14 cities showed a gain of over 5000 votes in favor of license compared with last year.
The 1901 election saw Springfield elect Democrat Edward H. Lathrop as mayor over Republican William E. Sanderson, the first Democratic mayor since 1901. Six cities re-elected mayors, including Fitchburg Democrat Fred OConnell and Lawrence Republican William B P White, with several others reelected or elected anew.
Forecasts show rain or snow in Boston and vicinity today with clearing later. Wednesday brings mixed precipitation and colder conditions with brisk west winds, followed by fair and much cooler Thursday.
Dr Philip Coombs Knapp chair of the lunacy commission testified that James M Harmon Jr is mentally irresponsible for killing Maude Hartley on December 18 1908 after a period of amnesia and now shows progressive mental degeneracy. District Attorney Higgins noted the term dementia precox. The defense will present Dr Edward G Lane as the next expert witness.
The morning opened with a 40 minute delay as Judges White and Fox, the district attorney, his aide Mr Hardy, and defence lawyers conferred in the lobby. Rumors swirled that the defense would seek to dismiss the jury and grant a new trial for Harmon. Sergeant Harmon, after a recess, testified he visited Higgins on the night of the murder and urged a commission to check his son's sanity before recovery.
