Republican aris tocrat Dewey remains in power but positions as the People’s Candidate to mislead voters. He previously opposed eight hour day laws for cities and towns and opposed labor hour reductions for railroad workers. He opposed popular election of senators and backed increased capital stock for the Boston and Albany Railroad. He also opposed Saturday half holiday for minors and women.
Frothingham says he would not change his published record and lists votes against free text books and school supplies for public schools. He also opposed hours for women and minors, home for consumptives, eight hour day, peaceful communication with applicants during strikes, tax on inheritances, day labor on public buildings, constitutional amendments, railroad fare reductions, firemen time off, gas and electric plants, food adulteration bills, more railroad brakemen, two cent mile railroads, popular election of U S Senators, living wages for tunnel workers, municipal franchise referenda, and franchise locations.
Acting Mayor Whelton defends removing the schoolhouse commissioners arguing their methods foster competition and bar city work to those with social or corporate backing. A Frothingham rally led by Edward A. Filene faced a threatening call about business impact but proceeded. George W. Anderson demands proof from McNary on charges against Fitzgerald as Democrats split. Fitzgerald pledges preservation of Old Ironsides and McNary proposes a bill to make the frigate a naval museum at Castle Island.
