Anaconda at St James Hotel Stirs City Hallways

Charles A. Donaldson, an eccentric map maker staying at the St James hotel, kept a nine to ten foot anaconda. The snake escaped its box in the hotel check room, went upstairs to Donaldson’s door, and slept there until a chambermaid found it. Donaldson defended the pet saying snakes are harmless and only squeeze prey. He described feeding, habits, and a belief that only seven poisonous snake types exist. He claimed the large constrictors rarely bite humans and shed their skins before meals.
