A man named Ferguson died of a blank cartridge wound in his ear after allegedly firing at Mrs. Whittaker who fled burning clothing. A revolver found nearby contained a blank in one chamber and Mrs. Whittaker and Whittaker described a struggle with the weapon.
President Bancroft of the Boston Elevated Railroad said the company has ample surface tracks to serve all travelers to South Station. Only a small number were discommoded as it studies arrangements for surface car adjustments. Facilities for reaching South Station for almost all of its 1,000,000 riders have not been diminished.
Assistant Secretary of State Bacon is confined to bed with a severe attack of tonsillitis. His temperature was very high yesterday but is reported slightly better today.
Newburyport December 4. Strong crews from Salisbury Beach and Newburyport life saving stations under Captains Charles and Maddocks fought a large cottage fire that threatened the summer colony. The blaze began at 11:35 near the Dewey Cottage owned by J. H. Murray of Haverhill and occupied by Albert Beaver and family, destroying a dozen cottages before containment.
While family dined, Mrs. Beaver spotted a kitchen blaze near the stove. The light structure forced the Beavers to flee as flames engulfed the house. Carpenter B H Green, who built most nearby cottages, helped summon aid and join the response from beach workers and an electric car crew. The Dewey cottage to the north quickly burned as flames spread.
Mrs. Maria Curcio 55 of 170 Endicott Street died after being struck by a United States mail car while crossing Washington Street near Haymarket Square. Motorman Angus McLean of Roxbury was arrested for manslaughter after permitting the car to continue to Post Office Square to avoid mail delay. The company said the motorman was blameless and would be helpful. Mrs. Curcio leaves a husband Angela and four daughters Rose Josie Mary Margaret.
Rear Admiral Robby D. Evans retired states he does not want a house or any gift from the people of Los Angeles or elsewhere. A letter from a supporter suggested such a presentation, but Evans declined the idea fully and finally.

Dr Lyman Abbott led a conservative stance against suffrage in a lecture where President Roosevelt’s letter drew mixed reactions from auditors and provoked protests by suffragists. Police removed offenders as the audience applauded and hissed. New York reports Samuel M. Biddison a broker is arrested for forgery in the first degree over 690 forged bonds of the Central Coal Lumber and Construction Co. Meyers, held on a prior bond theft, provided the tip. Regulus Shippey, already convicted for stealing bonds, may have his case revived per the district attorney.
President Roosevelt states the indispensable field for women's usefulness is as the mother of the family in a letter to Rev. Dr. Lyman Abbott read at a National League for Civic Education of Women event. The remark addresses suffragette concerns and reflects official views.

A wreckage ashore at Cape R Newfoundland signals the loss of the Soo City, an excursion steamer on the Great Lakes. Captain John G. Dillon of Brooklyn led the vessel, with 18 to possibly 28 crew aboard. A wife and three children awaited him home.
The Soo City departed Michigan City on November 1 and reached Ogdensburg on November 11 where four more crew members joined. Captain Dillon assumed command at Ogdensburg from Captain F. W. Dounty. The vessel was reported last at Quebec on November 14 and was listed as missing a week later amid growing anxiety.
A Vienna despatch says the Cattaro branch reported bombardment of Cattaro since nine this morning. The Austro-Hungarian Bank notes contact with Agram and the ministry of war offered no confirmation, though the report cannot be denied.
