A Mukden despatch reports General Rennenkampff has captured Japanese guns and a convoy of 600 rifles, while 40,000 Chinese bandits and 8,000 Japanese reserve threaten his flank. Heavy fighting south of Mukden continues as Port Arthur’s fleet is said to be doomed to fall.
Prince Fushimi of Japan arrived at Back Bay station to a large welcoming crowd including Governor Bates staff and local officials. He met Secretary Yamanaka and dignitaries, toured the State House Doric chamber, then prepared for visits to Harvard and the Chamber of Commerce with a luncheon and a Beacon Street dinner invitation.
The Chadwick affair escalates as Mrs. Chadwick is petitioned into bankruptcy in federal court with Nathan Loeser named receiver. Eight hundred passengers on the ferry Paunpeck operating between Hoboken and New York were thrown into a panic when a Hudson River steamer struck the vessel in mid stream. The overhang tore away, several were injured by falling timbers, and the Paunpeck continued to Hoboken dock.
