Third Lowell Institute lecture on American navy by Ames Soley

Professor Ames Knnsell Soley U S N opened the Lowell Institute talk in Huntington Hall detailing post Revolution history including the embargo and impressment controversies, the Chesapeake incident, and early naval policy. He traced the move from gunboats to a stronger fleet and noted political opposition in Massachusetts. He promised to discuss naval policy next.

Social reception honors Mme Greville at New England Woman's Club

A large Boston audience welcomed Mine Greville at the New England Woman's Club in Lenox parlors from one to thirty p m. Mrs Howe presided and lauded her as a woman of letters. Mme Greville spoke of French life and home culture, praising American admiration and hospitality. A luncheon followed and Greville thanked the club for its warmth.

Boston University Law School appoints replacements after Wetherbee death

Provision made at Boston University Law School for the vacancy caused by the death of Mr John E Wetherbee. Homer Albers 20, a Western college graduate, will conduct recitations. he entered the law school in 1893 and graduated last June ranking among the scholars. Jere B Smith to conduct evidence collations. he is a young man of rare ability and has held close legal relations to Mr Wetherbee. C Jenney secured a contract. a graduate from the law school in 1883 he is elected to the Legislature and regarded as a preeminent scholar. Other appointments will follow as soon as possible.

Worthington Opens Boston Custom House Under Saltonstall

Mr Worthington handed the key to Collector Saltonstall at nine with few ceremonies. The oath and introductions followed as deputies Barnes Monroe and Swift were reappointed, and General Swift aided successor Prentley. The day ended with clerical duties and formalities, the custom house closing at noon and remaining open for document work.

Portland and Ogdensburg Foreclosure Proceedings

In the United States Circuit Court case Mercantile Trust Company versus Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad Company a May decree required payment into the court registry of 1 590 744 to redeem overdue mortgage bonds. Trustees Milli ken Webb and Jose are named owners of the railroad and appurtenances. Boston and Lowell railroad matters include a modified agreement with Concord road yielding about 82 000 yearly, with a new timetable and twenty added locomotives. Omaha and Elkhorn Valley rail link cited with 1.4 million capital and route from near Fremont into Nebraska. Woburn division opening of Boston and Lowell line set for December 14 with five trains per day between Woburn and Wilmington.

Boston Art Club hosts Students Association exhibition

The Boston Art Students Association opened at the Boston Art Club on Boylston street with a morning display and evening reception. Ninety six oil paintings and eighty drawings, crayons, and black and whites are shown by artists including W. H. W. Bicknell, Holker Abbott, F. S. Sturgis, Newton Mackintosh, and Alice Hinds. The show runs daily all week, with evenings closed.

Boston Furniture Trade Mass Meeting Considers Union

At Turn Hall last evening workers in Boston furniture trades held a mass meeting to organize joiners and cabti remakers in Boston and vicinity. Me Everich of the New York Cabinet workers Union urged trade organization for protection, insisting union aims aid all, not oppose capital or employers. Steps were taken to form a local union similar to those in New York Chicago and grant rapid, with the meeting adjourned amid enthusiasm.

Police tracing the Mannam mystery in Groton identify Jack the bartender as not involved. The woman behind the strange letters used real names at Groton House. authorities say she must have used genuine people or risked exposure before the crime’s impact.
