Edward Barrett of Lynn aged 45, despondent from loss and drinking, wandered to Cedar Grove Cemetery in Peabody and tried three times to end his life. He ingested rat poison and jumped into Spring Pond, was rescued, and died at Lynn Hospital shortly after 4 PM. He left a troubled history including widowhood, the death of a child, and prior threats of self harm.
In South Boston a dispute over a note at a small candy shop escalated into a brutal fight between William H. Jordan and George A. Van Campen, with H. H. Holmes later found fatally wounded.
