Local alarm reported from Box 183 at 2 55 p m yesterday for a blaze in an unfinished wooden house on Cottage street. Cause traced to overturning a small ster used to dry plastering. Damage estimated at 50 dollars.
Across Dover and Syracuse a morning blaze destroyed tenement housing owned by Quinn heirs and stock farm barns at East Syracuse killing fifty seven cattle. Portland and Lynn reported damaged stores with partial insurance. A barn at Bennis brickyard in Harthorp burned with a missing watchman and several animals perishing in a probable 1000 loss.
Weather forecast for twenty four hours starting December 1 lists light snow or rain in New England and eastern New York with colder conditions and westerly winds. Cautionary signals from New Haven to Eastport. Chicago reports a coming cold wave with temperatures dropping about 15 degrees in twenty four hours.

William H. Wallace and Stacey B. Opdyke were arrested in New Haven charged with conspiring against Thomas Meaney a longtime worker who switched companies and was fired after three weeks. Vice President Reed posted the nominal bond. Labor groups see the case as a test of blacklisting practices.

Newburyport, November 30. The Independent citizens caucus unanimously nom inated William H. Huse editor of the Herald for Mayor. Others named include alderman candidates John J. Putnam William A. Styles Rudolph Jacoby A C Richardson S E Wilson and C A Currier. Overseers of poor nominees are J C Stevens H P McIntosh and L W Sargent.
Maupen residents report Charles Edward Sweet will run for Mayor with George Griffin and Frank Clark as aldermen at large. Temperance advocates aim to win by a no license vote, hoping for a GUO majority.
Howard T. Blackstone, a discount clerk at the Canal National Bank in Portland, has embezzled about $25,000 and absconded after taking a Thanksgiving vacation. He sent a note to his wife from New York stating a misfortune and planned exile, leaving behind a deed of a house and Maine mining stock as partial collateral. He is 82, with a wife and three children, and had worked at the bank since his junior clerk days.
At about 4 PM a village cart on Brighton avenue Brighton tipped when harness failed. Mrs Frank C Smith of 119 Oxford Street North Cambridge suffered a broken nose and left arm with serious internal injuries. Mrs Herbert J Smith and a child from Lexington were also in the cart. They were taken home by Officers Bates and Hall and treated by Dr Brown.
Cincinnati reports Shipley Dorsey & Co wholesale dry goods firm assigns to Samuel Tatum. Murray Shipley also assigns. The firm had asked for an extension last month. Liabilities about 800000 with assets larger. Assignment said to be a formality. Business to continue. Creditors mainly in Boston New York Philadelphia.
In Grooucester on November 30, the Democratic mayoralty convention nominated F. H. Gaffney a young former common council member and state legislator. Also named for the school committee were William A. Pew William H. Jordan and George Lane.
The Red River and Coast Line steamboat Richard burned at Cocodrie about forty miles above the Red River mouth yesterday. The vessel carried 307 bales of cotton. Fireman George Clarke and Watchman Charles Robinson, both colored, drowned. Dick Hickman the cook was dangerously burned.
