War Department orders 15000 National Guard members on the Mexican border to return to their states mobilization camps. General Funston to recall three regiments from New York, two from New Jersey, two from Illinois, two from Missouri and one each from California Oregon Washington and Louisiana.
Secretary Baker announced after a White House conference with President Wilson that about 6000 regular coast artillerymen serving as infantry on the border will be sent home. More regiments may follow in a few days if transport remains smooth, with selections left to General Funston as states mobilize to provide war footing protection along the international line.

Romanian troops have driven Austrian forces from mountain passes and advanced into Hungarian territory near Transylvania. Reports via Bucharest say Romanian forces are within three miles of Kronstadt, with a coordinated attack plan evident before Romania declared war. The invasion appears to originate from the Petrozseny region northeast of Orsovo toward the Gyergyio Mountains.
A mob of about 3000 in Lima Ohio forced entry to the jail seeking Charles Daniels held for assault on a white woman. When Daniels was not found the crowd seized Sheriff Eley, placed a rope around his neck, and dragged him toward a street corner to coerce disclosure of the prisoner’s whereabouts.
Rotterdam Aug 30 report says a bitter Falkenhayn versus Hindenburg clash centered on Verdun. Hindenburg opposed any French offensive and pressed for an immediate strike at Russia with campaign plans and preparations already made behind the front in Courland.
A mob beat a man who refused to reveal a hiding place and then fled town in more than 100 automobiles. Eley was placed in the first car while police chief McKinney and several officers were injured. Fire engines tried to help but arrived too late to save Eley as the mob dispersed northward.
The Interborough Rapid Transit Company announced a third pay increase this year affecting about 12,000 employees. The raised payroll amounts to roughly 1.25 million dollars annually and covers subway and elevated line workers in Manhattan.
The court party led by the Kaiser surrenders to Falkenhayn amid a dispute over Verdun. Hindenburg sought more forces for Russia but was overruled for the Verdun offensive backed by the crown prince. Romania’s intervention shifted Kaiser support to Hindenburg, sending troops toward Hungary as 80 generals are removed across fronts.
Sigmund Lukanowski aged 60 of 51 Vestry Street was seriously injured when struck by an auto truck. He suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Hale Hospital where he is listed on the dangerous list.
