Plymouth Aug 29 The Plymouth district court discharged Rev Malcolm Douglass D D pastor of Christ's church after trial on charges of wilful trespass on land belonging to the Pilgrim society atop Cole hill The judge ruled the government failed to prove willful trespass and discharged the defendant amid a large crowd and raised questions about land enclosure signs and property ownership.
A large crowd gathered at the Lawrence jail for the Sunday religious service to see Henry K. Goodwin, the Swan murder suspect, but he did not attend or respond to calls. Sheriff Herrick barred interviews and refused to disclose his cell location. Galveston Tex Aug 30 The Southern Pacific Railway company has obtained control of the New York Texas and Mexican railway running Rosenberg junction to Victoria. The road will operate with Gulf Western Texas and Pacific railway to form a through line from New Orleans to Victoria Cuero and Indianola, improving passenger and mail facilities with no tariff changes.
In Lake Maranacook Missouri on August 30 the Salvation Army held its closing day with about 1000 attendees. The army reported 50 members present including Jacob Granger, Young Sampson Charles Smith the saved zombie and Fred Riley the Devil Driver. The three day meeting featured spirited sessions and an attentive, respectful audience, leaving a strong impression.
The parochial school building once called the Lodian Head house was purchased by Bishop D M Bradley and remodeled. It was consecrated this afternoon by Bishop Bradley of Manchester, assisted by Fathers Houlihan and Higgins with many attendees from the Catholic community.
In Old Orchard Maine on August 30 the WCTU held a praise meeting at 9 30 led by Mrs L M N Stevens president of the Maine union. Miss K S Tobey of Boston gave a Bible reading at 10 30 and at 2 30 devotional exercises were led by Mrs Caroline Buell with Mrs Mary G son of Hyde Park delivering an address on temperance education. The tabernacle drew good attendance.
Job Williams principal of the Hartford school for mates attended with Prof. T. L. Brown of Flint Institute and Rev. Samuel Rowe state missionary. Their presence greatly increased interest and value, and the movement is believed to bring great good to Maine deaf mutes and lead to permanent action for their benefit.
Newport R I Aug 30 The Summer Torpedo Instruction class nears a three day exam before the board of examiners. Commander Sampson reports that printing lectures and condensed theory allow more practical work and essential torpedo warfare knowledge for duty aboard ships. Gun cotton manufacture at the island station now equips nearly all ships. The 85 officers in the class include Capt Byron Wilson and several lieutenants, ensigns, normal cadets, and Marine personnel attending induction.
About 11 P.M. Saturday Patrolman Dins arrested John Suulli van, 50, on drunkenness charges in South Boston. He was locked up on Fourth near K Street. He ate at around 6 P.M. Sunday and felt fine. At 9:30 P.M. a passing officer found him gasping and dead. Medical Examiner Steadman ordered removal to the North Grove street morgue. Undertaker Tinkham transported him. Sullivan had ten homes and arrived from Ireland about two weeks ago.
Memorial services were held at the Jewish synagogue on Nineteenth street and Fifth avenue. A black draped ark stood at the center as eight flame torches lit the hall. Rev A R Wendes of Newport opened with a discourse followed by a eulogy by Rev S Morris of Philadelphia.
John Lentz, recently hired by the New Haven railroad, fell from the barge Frolic returning from an excursion near eight this evening at Hantrorp Conn and drowned. Uncertain whether death was accident or self harm after he told his dinner companions he had lost his job, his wife eloped, and he did not care to live.
Four inmates escaped from Chemung county jail by removing a roof vent in the bathroom to the roof, then lowering themselves to the ground on a rope made from blankets and bed ticking.

San Francisco August 30 The Alaska Commercial Company's steamer St Paul from Alaska arrived last night carrying 99 996 seal skins valued at over a million dollars. Willis E Everett of the Smithsonian Institute was among the passengers on board.

The thirty eighth Massachusetts will hold its annual reunion at the United States hotel on Oct 15. The fourth reunion of Company A Fourth Regiment Heavy Artillery Massachusetts Volunteers will be at the Willows Salem on Friday Sept 4. The twenty first annual reunion of the Third Massachusetts Cavalry Association occurs at New Bedford on Thursday Sept 3. A dime bake will be served at 2 30 PM and gin aoe yi will be at the Parker house at 5 15.
The Berkeley school opened in a elegant Young Men's Christian Association building and attracted over 50 scholars in its first year. Of the 15 graduates, 10 entered the Institute of Technology after passing exams, with strong emphasis on studies, moral and physical training, and a well equipped gymnasium supervised by competent instructors. A 12 year old boy named John Williams was sentenced to two years at the house of industry on Deer Island for truancy in June. He leaped from a window Sunday afternoon and was killed instantly. Police notified his parents of Fourth Street, South Boston.
