Special Despatch from Worcester dated August 3 1883 reports a central electric lighting station to serve 200 lights. Builders include Senator Bates Charles B Whiting and Edward A Goff of Boston based American Electric Dominating Company. Station sits in Worcester Dorset building basement near Franklin Square with work to start immediately and merchants to receive power by September. City plans 100 street lights and management by Bates and Whiting to ensure early success.
New Haven police took George Bunnell proprietor of Bunnell's museum in New York into custody after Mrs. Maria McGee of Birmingham accused him of improper conduct aboard the New York to New Haven express train. Bunnell denied the charge calling it a great mistake and was held in $100 to appear in city court tomorrow.
Porrisburg residents report a drive to establish an independent baseball association with representatives from Chicago St Louis Indianapolis Pittsburg New York Philadelphia Brooklyn and Hartford to meet October 12 in the city. The group aims to discard the eleven men rule used by the league and the American Association and to pursue changes in playing rules.
John Smith, 21, sleeping on Mulberry Street steps, dies after an encounter with Patrolman Maurice McNamara during transport to Elizabeth Street station. Smith’s neck is broken, head injury noted. A Nashville detective testifies identifying James as B J Woodson and as J B Howard in different guises. other witnesses claim the prisoner was not among the robbers and that James’s allies provided an alibi through associates Dave Poole Alien Palmer and others.
London reports a major Java eruption flooding 50 square miles from Point Capucin to Negery, with 15,000 deaths in sparsely populated areas and Batavia area destruction. Tamerang and Speelwyk towns obliterated, rivers diverted, and multiple offshore islands submerged. 75,000 total dead estimate, with ongoing submarine activity and heavy property loss.
An express Philadelphia and Atlantic City narrow gauge train derailed at Pleasantville due to a loose switch after the engine cleared it. Four passenger cars wrecked and a baggage car overturned. About 30 injured, including Detective Houghton and Conductor Lee, but none expected to die.
New York Aug 30 The mastodon bones found near Syracuse regarded as among the most valuable of their kind were today presented by Winslow president of the West Shore railroad who helped secure them for Syracuse University through Arthur Jenkins of the Syracuse Herald The university gains a one of a kind fossil set and Jenkins and Winslow receive thanks for the gift
In Brenham Texas Thomas Hoxie 21 son of Dr Hoxie was shot dead from his horse by William Lestard also about 21. The pair had a prior dispute the previous night with Hoxie firing first but missing. Lestard fled then and later surrendered and is jailed.
Sylvester F. Fuller former cashier of the Second National Bank of Jefferson Ohio and his assistant H L St John were arrested in Cleveland on charges of stealing 50 600 of the bank funds. The theft was uncovered last December and the pair fled to Canada before being tracked down and captured.
At Portsmouth a steam fire engine trial awarded first prize of 100 dollars to the Richard Vines of Biddeford. Nashua, Methuen, Salem, Dover, Marblehead and Haverhill engines also competed. Biddeford groups celebrated with brooms, while hand engine contests and rowing races followed.
Ex officio mayor Liam Pinckney Whyte and others are named in indictments for furnishing supplies to the fire department in violation of city ordinance. Separate counts accuse J Frank Morrison Samuel W Register Thomas W Campbell Charles B Slingaff Samuel Hanna Bartholomew H E Smith and all board members except the mayor of malfeasance. Grand jury noted the mayor’s ex-officio status could imply responsibility but state law officials said there was no evidence to support that charge.
New York Aug 30 the senate sub committee on labor and education resumed hearings. Dr Norvin Green former Western Union president described rapid telegraph growth and consolidation costs. He noted underground lines, high capitalization, and a shift toward cheaper service with post office style operations. He said Western Union operated with 80 million dollar capitalization and 430000 miles of wire, stressing public utility over profit.
New York August 30. The funeral of John B. Arato an alleged highwayman shot after a botched robbery was held at 2 30 pm with few mourners. The body lay at an undertaker's, his wife and child among the later procession, Arato from 34 Bond Street, of respectable Italian parents.
Telegrams report three new yellow fever cases in Pensacola including a Dr Owens servant and a hospital attendant plus one death. Ship Island quarantine lists 12 vessels with 19 yellow fever cases all from Vera Cruz. Hattie M Bain had a case after leaving Havana and was disinfected. New Orleans grand jury urges a crematory under Charity Hospital for contagious deaths. Pensacola board of health urges neighboring cities to lift quarantine as no cause remains.
In Swanton Vermont a temp printer calling himself C H Brown vanished after two months at the Swanton Courier. Editor pursued him across rivers and forests and he was sent to the workhouse for three months plus costs. It emerges he is C S Packard of Westfield Massachusetts, with prior Massachusetts corrections and a burglary warrant from Springfield.
Twelve editorial and reportorial attaches of the Chicago Herald resign from the Press club after a conflict with directory members who shelved a resolution suspending Melville Stone of the News for alleged unprofessional conduct. A general meeting to consider the resignation is set for Sunday next.
Aug 30. Dr A W Bullock of Alleghany prepared five powders for a German patient. The patient took one powder and died overnight. Bullock, upon learning the fatal error, killed himself with the same poison.
In Dublin Mr. Parnell reports promising progress of the National League in America and possible pecuniary aid. The Spanish Cabinet, after interviews, may not resign to avoid disrupting royal tours. Sagasta aims to preserve the schedule for September visits to Vienna and Berlin. Freeman's Journal hints at forthcoming disclosures about McDermott and dynamite conspiracies. House actions include railroad and museum bills. Dartmouth aid for indigent students tabled. district schools reform discussed. adjournment set for Monday.

At the Fire Underwriters' Association of the Northwest session Prof. A E Dolvear of Tufts University read a paper on electricity. In response to questions he warned that danger from electrical systems exists without proper precautions but said insurance regulations already in force make electric lighting safer than kerosene.
A special 7:30 am train carries about 150 travelers, mostly legislators and their wives, from Augusta to Bath for a steamer trip to Squirrel Island and Mouse Island. Gov Robie and his wife join the party. Dinner is at the Somerset House before returning by afternoon boat to Bath and the connecting train.
The final proceedings in abolishing the tribal relation of Narragansett Indians were held at Fort Ninigret in Charlestown. A dedication ceremony featured Rev. F Dennison's oration, M 5 Greene's poem, and remarks by Gov. Bourne, Senator Aldrich, Representatives Chace and Spooner, among others. A large crowd attended.

In addition to the Airline drop from 4 to 3.50 to Louisville met by the Ohio and Mississippi and the Wabash roads, the Ohio and Mississippi now announce a rate of 3.50 from here to Chattanooga via the Ohio and Mississippi and the Cincinnati New Orleans and Texas Pacific roads.
The Boston Caledonian club held its thirtieth annual picnic and games at Spy Pond grove Arlington with 12000 attendees fueling a day of races, throws, and Scottish sports. Prizes totaled 1200 dollars across morning and afternoon events including heavy stone, hammer, caber, running events, and a wrestling match won by Duncan C. Ross and others.
Telegrams from St Albans claim the Southeastern railroad was sold for 3.5 million to the Chapman syndicate, but the road's general manager denied the report, saying negotiations are still in progress and not concluded.

In Crystal Falls Michigan the Great Western mine faces a strike after the old superintendent was discharged. Marquette County Sheriff leads a posse to guard the property amid a riot risk. The wife of the new superintendent Ji H Taylor is believed endangered as strikers threaten him.
Secretary Folger and General Superintendent Kimball arrived by revenue cutter Johnson from a lakes cruise. Folger visited Gen. Garfield's tomb, plans to return to Geneva, New York, then to Washington next week.
In South Boston municipal court Ferguson J Churchill 70 years old was arraigned on indecent assault against Eva May Spicer 7 and held in 1000 for the superior criminal court. In Roxbury court John Carroll charged with assault with a knife on Frederick Baldwin was held in 1500 for the superior court.
